Considering getting a 4-Door Rubicon

OK I need some info from you guys. I will start off by saying I am an FJ Cruiser owner and active on FJ forums. I have found them to be very helpful with a vast amount of knowledge. I imagine the same thing could be said about this group.

I bought the FJ 2 years ago and got hooked on offroading. I go at least once a month and do some pretty difficult things. The ride quality of the FJ is far better than the jeep. My brother had a 4dr Rubicon (but never really wheeled it). However I am going off road enough to justify the harsher ride if if comes with benefits. The FJ is a great vehicle, however......

My issues:
1) The FJ has a short wheel base and with the IFS it makes it very tippy in off camber situation. I have gotten my wife to go with me and we take our 2 small kids. It scares my wife to death when it feels we are going to tip over. It is my belief that the longer wheel base and SFA will lessen this.

2) The FJ struggles to run 35" tires. Its just a lot of mass/inertia to put on a IFS. Also storing a 35" spare presents some challenges. I am running 295/75/16 Hankook MTs right now. I really like these, but have thoughts of going to 35s.

Here is where I would love to have some input from you guys.

Is the SFA Jeep more stable in off camber situations when compared to IFSs? Feedback from those who have wheeled both would be great.

What are the issues (necessary mods) that I would face trying to put 35s on the Jeep?

Yes, Straight axle is more stable. If you are serious into offroading, you'd be better off with a JKUR. Than your FJ.

When I bought my Rubicon last month, I also looked at the FJ. The FJ does have a better ride, and I really considered it at one point, but the Rubicon sold me on staying with the brand. Besides, I really enjoy ripping the sales manager at the Jeep dealership a new rectal cavity when his sale's numbers are low. He knows I'll buy when it's time. He knows I can afford the ride. He knows I'm ready to buy when I bring him a bottle of Pepto and he always caves eventually.

I agree, solid axle is more stable. A buddy of mine has a FJ with 3.5in lift on 35's. He stores his spare on his roof rack. Some advantages of the JKUR vs the FJ is JKUR has front and rear e-locker vs. rear e-locker and a-track on FJ. Also There is a lot more jeep aftermarket support out there than the FJ. Lastly, total cost of build on the JKUR is typically going to be less than the FJ.

Thanks for the info guys.

Yeah I would consider the rack, but would just add more top side weight to the already tipsy FJ. This past weekend I scared my wife to death with all the off camber stuff at one of the local OHV parks (The Gulches).

I am a regular on the trails now and it is real important for me to be able to do this with my family. So if it will make the wife feel better I am for it.

This is what I would be leaving behind.

Thanks man. I really like the FJ. I was actually looking at dropping 3 grand to regear and add a front locker to it. However I really want to decide if I am going stick with the FJ or switch to a Jeep before I do this. Its too much $$$ just to turn around and sell.

I know I am asking a slightly biased audienced, but how is the general reliability on the trail?

Nice FJ. I really enjoy my JKUR. And during nice weather like we're having in TX right now, I just hoist my hard top off and throw on a bikini top to keep sunburn at bay. And if I'm feeling really frisky, I can take the doors off in no time flat. Pretty sure you can't do that with your FJ....and believe me....kids LOVE when you go top and doorless.

That's a great looking fj. Now with that being said get rid of it and get into a jkur. You'll have a blast wheeling it especially with the top and doors off, and it comes stock with great features like front/rear lockers and electronic sway bar disconnects.

Well I have done it. The FJ was sold and I am the owner of a 2013 JKUR!

Wont be able to make this one, although I like Hurricane Creek. I wont be picking up the Jeep until Friday. Its being driven down from a Maryland dealership, which is fine because I need the weekend to undo the modding from the FJ. I am in Mooresville, about 30 minutes north of Charlotte. I go down to the Gulches 3-4 times a year, but Uwharrie is my main wheelin place.

I too am looking at either a rubi 2 door or 4 door. What's a good price for a 4 door, auto, hardtop, 4.10 axle, tow package? Test drove the 2 door today, nice. I might be better off with the 4 door, since I'm 50 ( yeah i know, i should buy a honda pilot or something, but I still have some life to live) Any ideas? Thanks
