Aftermath of the 4/28th run
 
So far the results of this particular run have cost me:
  • Driver's front axle u-joint (replaced with Spicer 5-760x joint)
  • Passenger's front axle u-joint (replaced with Duralast Gold joint)
  • Damaged passenger's outer axle shaft (looks like the trunnion gouged and elongated the yoke ears. I had to force the new joint on with a hammer. Not sure how long the part will last though)

And to date, just this weekend - I noticed the johnny joint on my driver's side rear upper control arm was loose. Apparently the snap lock came out of the retaining groove and the washer and bushing made their way out. So on Saturday evening, I went online to look up rebuilding a johnny joint. Currie makes a rebuild tool for about $90. Unfortunately, I didn't have the time (work schedule would take me out of town) or did I want to spend $90 for a special tool.

What I did have on hand, was my Harbor Freight u-joint press :). The johnny joint removal was fairly easy, once the control arm was removed from the axle and frame, the joint popped right out. I disassembled the joint and cleaned all of the old grease and gunk out of the joint's components. Next I lubed the joint and assembled everything back together. The johnny joint is fairly easy to rebuild, the joint consists of 2 washers, 2 poly pieces, a ball and a snap ring. The difficult part of the rebuild is to press the poly in far enough the reseat the snap ring in its groove. The u-joint press along with a socket wide enough to press the washer but small enough to fit within the snap ring - was easy enough to press and install the snap ring. So for those of you who are considering rebuilding your johnny joints, you don't have to spend $90 for a special tool :thumb:.

Now I'm ready to hit the trails again :dance:, well at least when my work schedule allows.

One last note, I now know why my Jeeps leans to the passenger side. It looks like my shop that installed my OME lift, did not follow the ABBA sequence, rather they installed the coils ABAB. So sometime later this summer, I'll be switching the rear coils, to level out the Jeep.

Glad to hear the run only resulted in some small replaceable parts here and there- i.e. the U-joints and the single Johnny Joint. Luckily, those parts represent "wear and tear" and "wheeling" and not something that came from the run entirely- i.e. a tree limb through the sidewall of your tire, or a boulder in your passenger seat.:)
We'll have to head out again. I hope it rains some more, if it keeps too dry for too long, I worry the park will close with a fire ban sooner than they usually do. Better get that wheeling fix in for sure now while it lasts!:)

Yup, I like the Johnny Joints myself too, better than those permanent rubber bushings on other lift kits. You rebuild 1-2 of those and it is far cheaper than buying new control arms. Nice to see you were able to wing it and get back on the road.

Now, what is this spring sequence? What's ABBA (besides the music group) vs ABAB?

LOL, on a pair of OME coils/springs, one spring is always a tad taller than the other. OEM identifies the taller spring as 'A' and the shorter spring as 'B'. Per OME instructions, Front coil 'A' goes on the driver's side while rear coil 'A' goes on the passenger side. So front coil placement is AB and rear is BA, ABBA.

Currently, both taller coils are on driver front and rear, hence my lean (driver side is higher than passenger's). Which is not the correct sequence...

After further inspection, it looks like I will also be changing out my control arms with new ones this summer. Looks like the bushings on the lowers are all shot and making a lot of knocking and popping noises :nonono:.

My 1998 Jeep is starting to show her age...

Oh that's neat, I didn't know that OME did that with their lift kits. Well, looks like buying that JJ rebuild tool will be worth it now if you have to do all the control arms now.:)

Well, I took the plunge and ordered ROKMEN's control arms :punk:. I already have Rokmen's rear adjustable uppers, so I just ordered a pair of front uppers and front and rear lowers. I'll be rocking johnny joints all around.

I don't think this is typical for a Jeep on 2" lift.

How many years did you get out of your current JJ's? Why not rebuild all of the ones you already have?
Anyhow, the Rokmen stuff is pretty good. I use their skids/armor. Kind of heavy, probably could go lighter next time, but for now, it will do. They make their underbody skids and engine skids out of 1/4" steel over most others using 3/16". I used their high clearance gas tank skid and steering box skid too. Kind of feel sorry for the fed-ex guy when he delivered it, I thought my order alone gave him a hernia. :)
Have fun putting those arms in:) I love my TJ, it's so amazingly easy to work on, kind of like a giant riding mower.:)

I originally only had Johnny Joints on my upper rear in effort to adjust my pinion angle when I installed my SYE last summer, so I only had it for roughly a year. The rest of my control arms were the ones that came straight out of the factory. The original bushings were taking their toll since they are over 15 years old. Not to mention, the arms were taking a beating and were deformed from the rocks at TSF :).

Apparently I have a defective Rokmen control arm end :nonono:. Went wheeling today, 5/18 and when I got home and inspected the Jeep, my johnny joint came undone again :mad:. Looks like I'll be claiming the lifetime warranty on the arm this Monday. Sucks :banghead:.

On a good note, ran some good trails - rocky uphill, hogsback hill climb, airplane hill filters, firebreak 5 and last - bates.
