Why oh why?
 
So I was looking into getting a new rear axle. Looked into F8.8 and could not locate one close by. So I found a Dana44 and picked it up. This is where I made my mistake. I didn't do any research before I spent my hard earned money, come to find out its a Dana44A. You guessed it I'm a dumbass! So now I have an axle that I can use but its a waste of money and time. Just curious if anyone has some insight on why they would have/manufacture an axle that you can not upgrade or even just regear for heaven sakes!

try car-part.com for finding a yard in your area with an explorer 8.8 they should be one in dang near every wrecking yard in the country.

There are but he closest one is about 150 miles away. I know here is closer junkyards I just have to get the time to go. Along with most people I have to find time between work (US Army) and the most important things in my life, the family!

The only thing growing faster than weeds in junk yards is the amount of explorers. Should be able to get a good one for $100-200.

you can regear it down to 4.56 and lock it if you want to... i don't see what the problem is?

the only crummy thing about the 44a is the inability to lock it, so depending on what your plans were to do with it, id run it. I believe they can handle 33's-35's witout issues.

This all is great news. I spent 2 days looking for at least gears. But I will have to do more research unless someone can help with the next issue. I have read and kept reading once I found out but they say the carrier with 3.73 is the highest you can go numerically ways. If this is true then I'm back at square one.

Carrier for 3.92 and up-lost in the sauce boss

Everything I just read says the d44a has no carrier break.... the one you have will work fine

call your local jeep dealer and see what they "could" order for you, they should be able to tell what you can and cant get for it as far as gearing.

Ok question, I know about selectable lockers, LSD, and full locker. What's it man by mechanical. Is this the LSD? I'm looking at the spartan locker but I don't want a full locker if at all possible and I want to say the Aussie locker is full locked.

Mech means the same full locker... locks on wheel spin

Ok thanks definitely back to searching for an axle. Not going to do the full locker my YJ is a DD so this won't work for me.

Have you ever driven with a locker? Just adjust your driving style to stay off the gas in tight corners and it wouldn't be a big deal most likely

I have selectable lockers now. And I got the no sharp corners deal just not sure that I want to have to go oh wait gotta take this corner wide

If you have selectable lockers right now then they should not be engaged unless you engage them. That is what makes them selectable. An Aussie, LockRite, or Spartan are all mechanical, or "Automatic" lockers. They only lock when power is going to them (foot on gas). Right before you make a tight turn you let off the gas and they will release letting the wheels turn at different speeds around the turn, as you straiten out you hit the gas again. Limited Slip or Posi (same thing) are best for Daily Drivers (IMO) if you cant afford a Selectable locker, but are not a must. Plenty of people run automatic lockers in the rear. Its SPOOLS that you want to watch out for. Those are 100% locked all the time.

That's more clear of an explanation. I don't know maybe I was thinking to much, just dummy it up for me. I think either way I go I have some thinking to do.

After long debates with fellow off road enthusiasts I have decided to sell the D44A/HD. Found everything for my liking but a selectable locker. Found out also that the 44HD and the 44A is the same thing. And also the 44A has no carrier break like earlier suggested. Although what really set me in the direction of the Ford 8.8 is the 44A has D35 axle tubes. Definitely not what I want back under my Jeep. Cause I read a thread that a ZJ owner had lifter his rearend with a floor jack and he destroyed his rearend setup. I guess he bent something and I don't want to do this a me swap again! So Ford 8.8 is in my YJs future and after I get everything for it I will be saving for everything that's needed to set it up right!

If you truss the tubes they will be stronger than the 8.8.

To Overkill; sure would but I want a selectable locker and all the 2 lockers for the 44A are mechanical. And on top of that there is little aftermarket rebuild kits if a bearing goes out. Just don't want to settle with it will work. I want an axle that I can say this is what I want in it.
