Rattle on driver side ?

Hey guys- and gals of coarse :punk:ha! Ive had a rattle coming from my seat belt driver side pretty much since Ive owned my jeep! Is this simple to fix? any ideas ? It rattles when you hit any kind of bump! Not sure how to get the cover off that holds the seat belt to see whats rattleing. Thanks

chasm 12-15-2008 03:26 PM

It's not your seat belt mechanism! I went through this, as have many other JK owners. The Dealerships know about it too! They have service bulletins out that tell them to grease the door latches. This doesn't solve the problem, but they have to go through their so called protocol first. Jeep has issued "revised" door latches.

After getting jerked around by 2 dealerships, I found one that ordered the revised door latches for me and installed them under warranty, and the rattles and clunks on the bumps are totally gone!

RichRock 12-16-2008 04:43 AM

Yeah I just had the striker plate readjustment treatment. Of course it didn't fix the problem.

Drummer08 12-16-2008 02:31 PM

Thanks! Ill talk to my dealer and let ya know what happens!

chasm 12-16-2008 04:10 PM

Drummer: Have the dealership parts guy / gal check these 2 numbers. I believe that they are correct for the revised driver and front passenger door latches: 4589277AG and 4589276AG

Good luck! Hope you don't get the same run-around that I did... or one of the famous "cannot duplicate" comments from the service tech!

Drummer08 12-17-2008 11:09 AM

Thanks Chasm. I went to the dealer yesterday and they are going to replace the latches. But Im not sure about the part numbers but I go in Thursday for the replacements. Hopefully they are the revised ones! Will keep ya updated!

chasm 12-17-2008 04:38 PM

I hope that solves the problem for you!

Man, it made a world of difference in mine. (My trail beater YJ didn't even have the rattles those '08 JK door latches make!)

Ask the dealer to perform TSB 23-024-08 while there.

Richard: The TSB you quote is the same TSB that I mentioned in my first post in this thread. ;) It is a waste of time and trips to and from the dealership! I went through it at 2 dealers before they fixed the problem with the "revised latches." All this TSB does is make a mess and ruin your pants when they brush up against the striker. The problem is the latches, not the lubrication... or they wouldn't have issued "revised latches."

You can easily identify and isolate the problem by wrapping 2 or 3 wraps of electrician's tape on the striker loop where the latch contacts it. This temporary repair will stop the rattling sound until the tape wears through.

Seriously, the grease will not correct the problem!:punk:

Hitchhiker 12-17-2008 09:24 PM

chasm,

I'll agree to disagree with you on this fix, the dealer performed this TSB on my JK and I no longer have the rattle. There has been no mess with the grease and none of my clothing has been ruined. I recommend the TSB, it works.

Maybe your dealer didn't do it right? :bottom:

Regards,
Richard

Different things work for different Jeeps! All depends on when it was made, what latches were used, who installed them and so on. Glad the grease worked on yours. It didn't work on mine and I tried 2 dealerships. The tape job works, but I wanted it right and the "revised latches" did the trick for mine.

It's good that Drummer08 is getting answers and that he has options... all thanks to fellow Jeepers!:D

Cheers!:punk:

Well I gave them a copy of that tsb and they claimed they followed it with grease AND striker adjustment. It did NOTHING! I will ask for the new strikers when I go in next time.

RichRock: It's not the strikers. The problem is actually the latches.

Ok everyone, thanks for all the responses! You guys are great. I went to the dealer last Thursday and they put a new latch on the driver side and theres grease on it as well! And also Chasm, I told them the part number as well and they checked it and it was a match! They had never heard of this happening until me. But the guys who helped me thought that just griesing it would only temporarily fix the problem. But now I have no rattle. They were really cool about it all and gave me no hassles! I guess Im lucky to have a decent dealership! I also took them in a 12pack of bud light haha! They were freakin out. Thanks again!

Drummer08:

Glad you got it fixed right the first time!

^well, good thing you brought back this issue, I just started hearing that noise this weekend, wasn't sure what it was, something within the door though, now I'll check on the latches

AndyLA 04-22-2009 11:37 AM

Mark/Hitchhiker,
Any list of all important TSBs to be aware of that might affect 09 JKs at this point?
Thanks
