Hey guys my name is Zach, and I new to this forum, this is actually my first post. Anyway I've had a 1994 wrangler yj for about 3 years and absolutely love it, except on the highway. Like I said I've got 33" nitto muds and I hardly ever use 5th gear. I'd like to lower my gears in the differentials but not sure how I should go about it. What all do I need to buy in order to switch to 4.10 gears? They are stock right now, I think 3.73. And input will be appreciated, thanks.

what motor and transmission do you have? most 6 cyl. came with 3.07 gears. 4 cyl came with 4.10 with the 5 speed. easiest way to get 4.10 gears if find a set of axles from a 4cyl. and swap them in. to change the ring and pinion requires alot of specialized
tools and is precision work that is best left to an experienced installer.

If you have the 4.0, you'd love the 4.56 gears! My RPM are perfect and I have a renewed power that I didn't have with the 3.07 and 33" tires. I feel like mine will do wheelstands, now. (ok, that's a little exaderated)

What engine do you have 4.0 or 2.5? And look on the tag on the axle to see what gear ratio you do have . I have the 2.5 and when I had 33's I didn't have 5th gear and I had 4:10 gears.

I've got the 4.0 with full new exhaust and firing systems, plenty of power out of the motor my gears just can't handle the tires. Are the 4.56 on your 33's just new ring and pinions? I'd like to go the cheaper route, whatever that is I don't really care.

Also have a fully rebuilt ax15 tranny with about 500 miles, shifts wonderfully.

Regearing your current axles is going to be almost $1000. You could go buy a 4.10 8.8 for $200 and a 4.10 dana30 for 150-200 and have left over.

I wouldnt go over 4.10 if highway driveability is what youre after. I have a 4.0 w/ 4.10's and 33's and love it, but with my RPM's around 2600 at 70 MPH, with 4.56 theyd probably be near 3000 RPM's, not ideal.

Alright this question is to Norcal_chris, how much fabbing would have to be done to the axles? And could I find those axles with 5 on 4.5 lug pattern?

4.10 front out of a 4 cyclinder is bolt in. ford 8.8 just needs new spring perches and shock mounts welded on, and bolt pattern is the same

+1 on the 8.8 with 4.10s. Then find a D30 with 4.10s or have yours regeared. 4.10s were great when I had my 33s and they still work well with my 35s.

its not a matter of opinion, its a fact that it is. Its even stonger than a D44. There are TONS of how-to's on doing the swap, on this site and many many others. Do some searching and see if its something youre up for

Ask them if any of the 8.8's have limited slip, too. If so, I'd get one of those. Especially if you don't plan on running a full locker in the rear.

For sure! Ilove my LSD. I rebuild mine and packed it a little tight. Acts just like a locker when i want it to. But nice and smooth on turns when i don't.
Also as far as gears go. I am running 4:10's with 36's on my 2.5. She is pretty slow but will easilly maintian 60mph in 4th. I drive mostly under 50mph in town. It's really not too bad. Not ideal but not horrible. I would like better gears and maybe someday i'll change them but I want's a v8 first.
