Any fabricators that build bumpers some advice please
So I'm on a budget (imagine that) and I want to fab a rear bumper with tire carrier. I work at a warehouse and the boss lets me take excess crossbeams for projects but the metal thickness is about as thick as the stock bumper. I have a basic design I'm just wondering if its even worth starting with that metal or sear hung scrapyards for something heavier?
most bumpers with tire carriers are 2x4 or 2x5 x 3/16" wall, and around 1.5-3" x 3/16" rectangular, round or square tubing for the swingout. if you can get that, go ahead and build a tire carrier.
keep in mind they are heavy, prone to rattles and you have an extra step when opening the tailgate.
i made a nice swing out tire carrier myself. i got tired of chasing rattles, swinging an extra arm, and the sag created by all that extra weight (120+ lbs) hanging off the rear end. I use a Bestop tub mounted tire carrier and hitch bumper now. Saved about 40lbs that way.
Doesn't sound like much, but add it up...two heavy bumpers, a winch, an engine skid, some rocker panels, larger tires & wheels, a roll cage, a gas tank skid, and some tools...you'll be surprised to find out you get into the 500-1000+ lbs extra real quick.
