Front Driveshaft clearance issue. Need help
 
Just finishing up a 4 in lift. Front driveshaft is about 2 inches to the trans skid on level ground. Has anyone else had this problem and what did you do. I saw that someone had notched the skid adournd the shaft, but am worried that it will weaken it too much. Any suggestions/ help. Thanks, Joel

I notched mine with an angle grinder.

I used an angle grinder to get close and finished with a die grinder. I kept grinding and checking so I only removed the metal necessary. Make sure you check at full droop.

You can also drop the plate with longer bolts and spacers but it does give you less clearance. It is an alternative if your worried about structural integrity

I have been trying to figure out the same thing. Here is my skid plate. It seems that if I were to notch it I would ruin that left side mounting arm totally.

Thanks y'all. I guess I will just grind it. I am still a little worried about strength but if it becomes a problem I can always upgrade, right. I do not want to drop the skid after just finishing a lift, but thanks for the suggestion.

I have the same problem, I took my skid off but plan to have one made by a buddy who does that kind of work, Skid Row sells a skid that takes care of this problem, unfortunately I don't have the link but you can check it out on their site, it's kind of pricey, about $280 but guess a punctured pan would be lots more

I was using the factory skid and figured I should just buy a new one. So I bought one that mounts to the bottom of the engine mount
I felt safer have nothing under my driveshaft for it to hit.

My 4" lift came with spaces to drop the front of the skid. Now I have a shovel. Yay!

Another option is to swap in a cherokee front axle.. its a stronger axle to begin with, being high pinion, it'll get the ds up and out of the way of rocks and such on the trail too.

Stock yjs run high pinion and the skid plate is much shallower than the deep tj shovel, and even when you lift them the driveshaft never touches the skid, so following the same concept on a tj would be beneficial.
