I am new to the forum as I just bought my first Wrangler. I want to put Mickey Thompson Baja MTZ's on my 95 and don't know about what size wheel to go with them. I want the tires in a 33X12.5. I was told that with the proper offset wheel that the stock suspension with shackles will clear them. I also have a 3.5 inch suspension lift planned for the future. Can anybody tell me what wheel size and offset I need please? Any other advice about tires/suspension/ fender clearance for a newbie would be greatly appreciated!

I don't think you can clear that size even with shackles unless you want to go over 1" which I would not

I personally would buy the lift and then the tires. If you put 33s with just a shackles it will look awful and ride as bad if they will even fit. I think you would be better off with a 1" body lift rather than a shackle lift as well. Replacing shackles is pretty pointless.

Nope. 33s will rub badly on a stock suspension, even w/ offset rims.

You need a lift, or radically revised fenders (flat fender kits) or a combo of both.

AS everyone else has said, you won't be able to clear 33" tires on a stock suspension. They'll rub on the fenders and that can severely damage the tires and your fenders. The largest tire you can run on a stock YJ suspension is a 31".

As for the size you'll need once your lifted, any wheel with a backspacing of 3.75" or less will fit just fine. There are tons of Jeeps running a 33"x12.5" on a wheel with a backspacing of 3.75" with no rubbing.

I had to install a 4" suspension lift to clear 33 12.5's and I still rub on the trails. I need another 2" as it sits...

Is that rubbing you're referring to on you fenders?

yes, I can turn just fine full crank w/the 4" lift. But when my front tires go up on something the back tires burry into the flares and touch metal on the opposing side.

That's on stock fenders right? I am considering bushwhacker pocket style fenders with cutouts... would that solve that issue?

dont confuse fenders with flares. Flares are plastic, fenders are metal. When I flex the front, the back tire not only rubs the plastic flares but pushes under it up the metal of the body. If I don't back off it, it will cut the tire. This would still happen without flares...

not my pic but this gives you an idea... its a 33" tire w/o a lift. With a 4" lift, when driving the front left onto something this is what the right rear looks like.

Yeah the flares I am talking about are designed to be used after cutting the fender larger so really that's what I meant. I am asking if a 3.5 inch lift and cut fenders will be able to clear the tire size without rub even on rocky trails.

BUMP STOPS!!!!!!!!!!! You should have no problems with 33x12.5x15's with a 4" offset rim. With a 3.5" list and proper bump stops.

I run 36's with 2.5" lift springs. + some other fun.... :)

Just don't over lift. Unless you want a monster truck.

Oh yeah? Right on the kit 3.5 inch kit I'm looking at comes with bump stops sized appropriately for it

I need to check mine in the rear and make sure the bump stops are working as designed. They came w/the kit so you'd think I wouldn't have trouble.

Even though it has bump stops you still may need longer ones.... Some lift kits say "designed for 33" tire". Hence you should be ok.

Now if you have anything other than stock setup(ie no trac or sway bars) this may cause issues with rubbing. IMHO get the 33's, get the lift kit, put it all on and see where your at. At best some tj fender flares can do the trick at worst you'll be gettingout the sawzall. LOL!

Btw what engine, trans, axles do you have? Just be aware the d35 rear end can be kinda weak especially with 33's if your hard on it. Are you going to offroad at all or is this a DD mostly?

Mainly a daily driver but I take trails every weekend. Usually nothing to harsh but sometimes there are quite a few rocky roads. NE New Mexico and SE Colorado, planning on Moab this summer. The engine is the 4.0 high output and auto trans. Not sure which rear is in it but it is stock.
