Fuel Pump Symptoms
I have a 91 YJ. Driving it yesterday with less than an eighth of a tank and it started to sputter and almost cut out. I gave it a good rev in neutral and everything was fine after that. Stopped got a full tank then took it out on the beach for a drive... parked for a little bit then get back in to start... no crank. At first I thought I must have drained the battery but the xmas tree was all lit and the head lights worked. I wasn't hearing the fuel pump kick on with the ignition in on position so I didn't even bother with a jump. So, I got a tow off the beach (embarrassing in a jeep)... once I got it in a spot near the beach access for sh*ts and giggles I turned the key again, wammo, I could hear the pump kick in, and it crank right up. I'm stumped - nothing really changed from the first time it didn't work to when it did besides 10 minutes and taking it out of 4WD. I imagine the pump will prob need to be replaced soon, or a have a bad ground that righted itself on the tow back.. no clue, any suggestions? Im having the tank dropped for some other repairs next week anything I can have looked at while I'm down there to save time and $$?
Thanks all.

Well if it didn't crank at all I wouldn't suspect a fuel pump

What motor is in your jeep? I had the same problem with my 2.5, took about a month before finding the problem. It was the C104 connection that is located on the firewall next to the battery, cleaned it really well and it fixed the issue of no fuel pump running.

I was getting a whinning noise out of my pump. When I removed the 20 year old pump, what I found was the sock strainer had fallen off, and the rubber on the pump that was submerged in gas had deteriated, and flaked off.
I replaced the pump.
Don't remove the tank, make an access door. Much easier.
