How water proof is a jeep

Just how much of the interior can get wet

mudmagnet63 05-09-2013 09:34 PM

All of it, but some damage may occur. :D

Squid90 05-09-2013 09:35 PM

It entirely depends on how you run it. If you pull the carpet and your drain plugs and add waterproof seat covers such as the one bestop has then it can stay open to the weather. Just as long as you cover up the dash

Mine is bed lined and so that takes up a lot of area and let's it drain easy. Last summer I got poured on without top on and the next day everything worked still. There was water in cup holders and seats were damp but overall not bad. FYI, I filled 3 5 gallon buckets full of water. Just to get an idea of how much water there was.

I have gone several times windows out and rain pouring so hard that I needed wipers on the inside of the windshield. No problems.

So far I have hosed out the inside of mine twice with no problem apart from the radio not being able to change stations until it dried out. However I did have all the carpets out and canvas seat covers on, seats got damp but not soaking wet. Off roading with top off gets inside of vehicle dirty/dusty/muddy/sandy.

Teague242 05-10-2013 02:04 AM

Left mine out for over a month with no top. No carpets either. No problems other than the radio would only turn on and change volume for 6 months after. The CD stuck in it was Tom Pettys "full moon fever" so I wasn't complaining lol.

However if you let them sit out in the rain all the time and water gets in the steering column, it will not want to start sometimes. 2 buddies of mine learned that the hard way. Cover that stuff up with Saran Wrap.

Now that does not make sense.

adkjoe 05-10-2013 07:50 AM

I've had 6" of water under my feet in the driver and passenger side floor, with the cup holders completely full etc... Everything was fine. However, I would not test the limits if you can help it.

Well depending upon what year and tranny you have, water up to the dash could cause water to get inside the tranny or t-case if you don't extend breather hoses.

Its a manual

Water up to the dash definitely has the potential to do some damage. There's a breather for the tranny right at the bottom of the door (it's on top of the shifter under the console). Unless you extend the breather then water past that is unadvised.

Had my 08 auto, caught with roof down n no doors, filled up to the door sills, cup holders over flowing and wheel jack space full. Pulled the carpet, floor plugs pulled the soft top up (to create a wind tunnel) and drove it up the highway to dry the seats. 24 hrs later you'd never know.

I can't recall the exact reasons, I think they just got rid of it because people were like going on and on about it forever, maybe he asked if it could be deleted/removed. I got to read it back when I first joined up here but I remember a few months later it went away.

I sprayed a bit too much around my steering wheel once when washing my Jeep, and wiped out my clockspring. Be careful of that too.

Haha good one. I got to see that one when I was just starting to get into modifying my jeep. It was a great thread.

If I sunk a jeep in a lake, I'd be hella pissed my thread was deleted. That's Tucker Max stupid and worth owning up to for the sake of other people's enjoyment. My .02c

While daddy may have taken away his jeep, he has that story for life. Remember that one time I drove a jeep off a dock 15 beers deep said no one ever but this guy.

GoldenSahara00 05-10-2013 05:16 PM

True story. All to impress a girl!

Wattapunk 05-10-2013 05:32 PM

I wouldn't recommend exposing the dash electronics to any water, even topless in a rain shower. As many threads about electrical issues related to corroded contacts, grounding issues, shorts, why open yourself up to that. The dash is not waterproof, water will find its way through cracks/crannies to the electronics. You should at least trash bag it if you plan on hosing the interior or parking it topless with potential storms.
