Help! Advice on New 2013 Jeep Unlimited Sahara
I am not sure if I am posting this in the right section so sorry if it is not, I am new to this forum. I had a few questions about buying a new 2013 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara. I currently have a 2010 F-150 with a 6inch lift on 35s. A lifted Ford truck is all I have ever owned so I need some serious help with some questions on the Jeep. I went to the local dealership yesterday and seemed to talk to a guy pretty knowledgeable on lifted jeeps but I am not to sure. I am looking for someone to shed some light on my choices to trade my truck in.
My first question is I was told that even with a 4in lift and 35s on a new 2013 Wrangler Unlimited Sahara I would still get a combo of 18mpg, I find this hard to believe since my truck only gets 12mpg and I have a chip and many upgrades into it. Is this MPG correct? If not what is the avg?
My next question is I see a lot of people talking about changing the gearing and all this if they want to lift the Jeep, is this normal? I only ever had to throw a lift and tires on my trucks when lifted.
I also talked to the salesman about the ride of a lifted Jeep. He said the ride is very good now with no road noise since they are now triple sealed. I am not expecting it to ride like a dream but would still not like to get beat to death as I make about a 3 hour drive once to twice a month?
Lastly I would be switching from a large truck to a smaller vehicle with no truck bed. I do not do a lot of hauling but like to surf and throw stuff in the back of the truck occasionally. If anyone has made this switch and could let me know there feelings that would be awesome?

Try to answer some of your questions
1. 4" lift and 35's - Many of us have lifted and put bigger tires on. If you do a search on mileage on this site, you will get a lot of different answers. I can tell you I have a 2.5 lift with 33's and I average around 17mpg around town. I have a 2013 JKU with 3.73 gears.
2. Changing the gearing - since you say the Sahara, make sure it has 3.73 gearing in it. The Rubicon comes with 4.10's. The gearing will be fine if you don't plan on extreme 4x4in.
3. Ride is smooth and quiet. First of all, it's a Jeep, not a luxury car. Jeeps are a little noisy but not bad. Take a test drive and go down the freeway. Also, if you put on a different tire, like a mud terrain TA, it will be a little bit more noisy but not to the point where you can't hear anything. I have BFG Mudterrain TA KM2's and they are a bit more noisy than regular tires but the drive is pretty smooth once you get it going past 10mph.
4. Carrying stuff. I bought the unlimited because of space and putting extra people in it. I can fold down the back seats, go to Home Depot, and put almost what I could in my truck.
Most will advise driving it stock for a awhile. Get a feel for the jeep and learn about it. Use that time to research lifting/mods.
There's a right way and a wrong way to go about it. Pretty much all comes down to your budget and how much you want to spend. A rubicon with 4.10's is perfect w/ 35's but 18 mpg is pushing it. Even stock don't expect good mileage with a Wrangler.

There are a lot of threads here that talk about the mpg of the new JK on 35's. In fact my buddy just got a JKRU lifted on 35's and it is a very capable machine. If you stay off the skinny stick I have read that you can get anywhere from 18 to 25 mpg. With my lifted TJ on 35's I only get 15 mpg combined with the 4.0, 6sp and 4.88 gears.
The JK will ride very well. I have driven a JKRU with metal cloak shocks and it was a dream compared to my TJ. But then again, it is a jeep, not an acura!!!!!!:punk:

I have a 2013, 4 door, with 3.73s. I am running 315/75/16 Duratracs - supposedly 35's, but they measure in at 33.75" tall when installed. I put on the Bushwacker flat fenders for clearance and everything else is stock. I know I will rub a little at full flex, but I rarely get full flex situations so I'm not worried about it. A lot of it depends on where you plan on going.
I wouldn't expect to get 18 mpg, even stock - unless you drive a lot of highway. Where my TJ got about the same mpg up to about 55 mph, and then a bit worse at higher speeds - the JKU has been doing really well on the highway and a lot worse at slow speeds. I was averaging 10mpg last night at work, with most driving at idle to 15mph over 9 hours of work. If I reset it and hit the highway I average 19mpg on the highway alone.
I will say this however, I love the look of the new tires, but after driving it stock for 6 months already, I wish I had done it earlier because I do notice the differences now. It's a bit slower on acceleration, takes a bit longer to stop too. The Duratracs I got are an E rated tire, the ride is stiffer than I expected, so I'm still adjusting the tire pressure down. It's getting better now at 29. If I had to do it again I think I would have sprung the extra money for 17's and 315's - the load is D again like stock. I just knew I hated the C range with 15's that I had on the TJ, it was too roll-y.
