Voltage drop
 
So my battery died last night and the alternator was not charging it at all. Had both tested today and they said the alternator was putting out 14.5 volts and the battery was dead. I replaced the battery and so far every is fine except I'm getting a reading of 12.5 volts. I cleaned all the cables that connect the charging system and still not normal volts.
Any thing else I should do or is it fine to run like that?

Are you cleaning all connections or just the battery connection also with a volt meter check all connections from alternator. Remember your cables from the alt don't go directly to the battery. Check all ground connections

I cleaned all the leads on the battery, starter, alternator, and all the grounds.

You could have a bad cable check you voltage at each connection point starting at the alt when running should be over 14 volts

Are you reading the 12.5v off your dash gauge or off the battery with a volt meter? If you're going off the dash gauge then you're probably ok, yj dash gauges aren't too accurate. If you're going off the battery with a volt meter, you should get about 12.5v when the engine is not running and around 14v with the engine running.

12.5 is what mine reads right now not running using a voltmeter. Fire it up and attach the positive lead of the voltmeter to the alternator output and the negative to a known good ground like the previous post it should be 14 or so. Also you can run an additional power wire from that same output on the alternator to the post terminal of the battery. Creates a loop in a sense however, its completely safe I did it to mine. Replace your ground strap. Run two additional grounds wires one from the engine to neg battery terminal the other from a bolt or bares spot on the chassis to neg. Battery terminal use 8 to 10 guaged for all of the additional wiring. The extra wiring will ensure you are sufficiently.grounded. do not use GPT. wire. This is something I recommend weather your having trouble or not. Its mainly backup wiring.

I was getting 12.5 everywhere with it running and not. Last night i was driving it an its like the alternator died because the volts started to drop and then everything electrical went dead or really dim. Then it started to sputter( probably the fuel pump shutting off) and the with went ca-put. The only thing I can think that caused that would be a bad alternator buy I had it tested less then 12 hours prior and it was reading 14.5 out side the vehicle.

Fixed it for now. Apparently the auto parts store tester doesn't know sh** all I did was replace the alternator.
