Horsethief Flats - June 1st

I'm going to head up to Horsethief Flats (3N03A) in Big Bear on June 1st.

Trail Description
The trail is a lesser known Black Diamond trail in the lower elevations. It is mostly a fun twisty, tippy, off-camber shelf road, and should be fine for any Wrangler. Will need recovery points, a full spare, and plenty of water. It's a short in and out trip so I may hit Jacoby up to Little John Bull to finish off the day. This should go without saying, but no drinking on the trails.

Meeting Place
We will stage and airdown at Cactus Flats OHV Staging Area (34.29837,-116.795633) on 3N07Y at 0900.

There will also be a group of us meeting for breakfast at Cafe 247 in Lucerne Valley, the intersection of HWY 18 and HWY 247, at 0730. It's only about 20 minutes from the trailhead and Steve swears by their breakfast burritos!

Comms
CB Channel 4

Staging Area Directions
Directions From Big Bear: Travel on HWY 18 towards Lucerne Valley. Very shortly after mile marker 59.73, there will be a righthand turnoff for 3N07Y (34.297133,-116.800847). This is nearly a 180 degree turn on the side of the mountain, and is very easy to miss so go very slow as you approach. The staging area is hard to miss, and you will be able to see it from the HWY.

If you'd rather you can travel further down the road, and a quarter mile past mile marker 61.00 will be a less dramatic right turn onto 3N03 (34.314774,-116.810251). Travel along 3N03 about 1.25 miles and make a right onto 3N07Y, where you will find the staging area a few hundred yards down on the right.

Directions from Lucerne Valley: Take HWY 18 towards Big Bear, and about quarter mile after mile marker 61.50 turn left onto 3N03 (34.314774,-116.810251). Travel along 3N03 about 1.25 miles and make a right onto 3N07Y, where you will find the staging area a few hundred yards down on the right.

JoeBot13 05-12-2013 12:41 PM

Jeff if you do end up camping up there would you mind me dropping my doors at your campsite?

Most definitely!

DaK 05-12-2013 08:59 PM

May have to do this to field test the latest mod prior to full deployment in Utah. Will be keeping an eye on this. Oh, will be drafting a first time big bear n00b as well.

Dougzin 05-12-2013 09:05 PM

Just curious how hard is this trail. I told my mom it was more moderate so she would come with me.

JoeBot13 05-12-2013 09:25 PM

Doug it will be a good trail for your mom, unless she is afraid of heights! It's rated Black Diamond... but it's more on the moderate side if you are in a Jeep. Vehicles with IFS have a bit of trouble in spots. There aren't any huge rock gardens or anything, just a lot of steep climbs and off camber sections. It gets a little tippy and twisty.

There used to be a lot more to this trail when I was a kid, but they've since designated it a wilderness area so we won't be able to go out past the flats.

I'm thinkin some gravy breakfast burritos at 247 cafe are in order...
If you've never had one...they're twisted ...

JoeBot13 05-12-2013 09:42 PM

That's actually the place I had in mind for breakfast!!

JoeBot13 05-12-2013 10:21 PM

Hey Steve... what do you know about 3N07A... cuts off of 3N32. If we end up on Little John Bull I might check it out... I want to see the Squeeze to see if it's anything special

Sorry dude ..I just saw your post...
If I remember right isn't that one of those trails that are part of the network of trails that spur off of john Bull ...at the top of the hill climb from the gatekeeper ...if so I ninja that there's a lot of good moderate stuff to play with in there...

We need to find 2N69X...that was a NICE one......someday .....

JPi1 05-13-2013 10:49 PM

I want to try to make this, haven't ran this trail on anything but my 570 Husky.

yeeper5150 05-14-2013 08:22 AM

I'm looking at doing a run that same weekend. What's your cap on this run joe, I might have at least 2 tag a longs.

So is all this off camber stuff I keep reading about similar to the trails around cleghorn?

JoeBot13 05-14-2013 09:06 AM

I'd like to keep it around 15 ... so with you and your tagalongs we'd still be under that!!

Here is a picture I stole from another forum about the off-camber stuff ... I haven't been on this trail in a LONG time ... I'm pretty sure the cabin was there last time it's been that long ... but it's probably comparable to the majority of heartbreak

yeeper5150 05-14-2013 01:58 PM

Sounds good Joe

JoeBot13 05-14-2013 03:42 PM

Hey Steve... I've been looking and looking for 2N69X and can't find it on any of my old maps ... are you maybe thinking of 2N06X? It offshoots from Holcomb Creek directly behind Hanna Rocks and connects to 3N16.

Nah...I'm really familiar with Lower Largo ..2N06x...I used to be one of VV4 wheelers Adopt -A-Trail..
I'm thinking its in the burned area..

JoeBot13 05-14-2013 05:02 PM

Yeah it's in the burned area ... it opened up with Holcomb though ... 2N06X may actually be a good moderate run for the M&G. Not sure if it goes too far into Holcomb Creek though.

The cool run is take Holcomb from big bear end, come out on crab flats rd, 3n19?, then go right to 2N06x and take that back to Holcomb, then run Holcomb backwards to big bear. Fun day right there

WOKNROX 05-15-2013 09:14 AM

Hey...have you ever stayed on 2N06x instead of crossing the creek to get back on Holcomb creek ...its a fun little travel that'll take u to the frog ponds...
