New YJ Member Needs Advice...

I'm new to all of this, so sorry if I'm posting on the wrong page. But I have inherited a 95 jeep wrangler YJ. Person who had it said the transmission has gone bad. It starts and everything. Could it be the clutch, or what's common with that years model? I plan on rhino lining it black and orange. What's some things I HAVE to get as a jeep owner? I plan on buying a 4-6 inch lift nothing to fancy. I currently drive a truck that is a gas hog. How much does it get mpg? It's a manual. Anyways, any comments are appreciated! Thanks.

Dude you asked way too many questions for one post, and you didn't give enough specifics to really help us narrow your tranny problem down. I'm not expert but that's my 2 cents. Sorry I couldn't help, I'm a newbe myself.

How about telling us what the tranny does and does not do.
Will it go into gear with the engine off? What happens when you try to start it like this?
Will it go into gear with the engine running? Or will it NOT go into gear with it running?

What engine and tranny do you have, it will help us.

I would focus on the getting the transmission and any other mechanical issues you find before thinking about a lift. There aren't any modifications that you just have to have, it's all about what you want and what you will use it for.

Welcome! Sounds like a fun project.

Fill us in:

Does it have a 4 cyl? or a 6?

Give us some more info and we would love to help you out. As far as saying a 4-6 lift nothing fancy...... when you go above 4 inches it gets fancy whether you want it to or not. Jeeps are rolling bricks expect somewhere around 12-20 mpg depending on driving style and equipment on the jeep.

"expect somewhere around 12-20 mpg"

Ahh another How's the MPG reality check. I could hear his heart break form where I live.

To OP,

Don't worry, what you lack in MPG you'll make up for in SMG (smiles per gallon).

Welcome to the forum, get us that info and we'd be glad to help you out. :punk:

Well it has a 4 cylinder! I can start the engine, but when I try to put it into any kind of gear it like locks up and makes a breaking-ish type sounds. Like it's locked up or something. I'm hoping it might be the clutch? And yeah I know I have to get it running before I think about souping it up. But any mods or attachments you think are just like the best? That you really enjoy! Just wondering. Thanks!

If it is running and you can push in the clutch in, put it into gear then its not likely the clutch. Once in gear when you start to let out the clutch you hear the grinding? I think I read that right. Does the jeep move at all or pop out of gear.

Have you drained the tranny fluid? A lot of metal chips in the oil will be and easy way to check the health of the tranny. Does it even have oil? Start with the simple stuff and get back to us.

From your description it sounds like the synchros or gears are gone. Drain the tranny pain and see if there are metal shavings/chunks in it. That is the best place to start and that sounds like the problem if I understood it right.
