New 99' TJ Lift info
 
Hey all,

This is my first post to the forum after my first Jeep purchase. I got my TJ for $3,500 with 130k on it. Didn't think that was too bad of a deal.

So, I am planning on doing an alignment on it, as it is very "swimmy". I saw the posts regarding this and will follow the instructions. Now I have a different question though. The Jeep is lifted, riding on 33" x 12.5" tires. I don't know what kit was used for the lift, but I have a feeling I could use some new shocks. How can I tell what kit was used, or even how much it was lifted and if my lift job was done right? The steering is super loose and I am concerned. I am a noob with lifts but a novice mechanic in general.

It looks like you have a 1 or 2 inch budget boost "spacers".

Interesting... So they didn't really do much... Even with such a short lift, the loose steering feeling would be present as a result? I should just invest in a better lift kit then?

Any thoughts about this kit? I have read some good reviews, and it seems like a good kit. Are their any pitfalls? Should I replace anything else while I am at it, like the ball joints? Thanks again for everyone's help!

First off, I'd never buy anything from Rough Country.

Second, there's alot more to a 4" lift than what you see there. You'll need an sye/cv and at minimum rear, upper adjustable control arms to set pinion angle. And yes a t-case drop will effectively do the same thing but that's like pissing into the wind. Why would you pay for a 4" lift and then lower a major part of the jeep 2"? It just doesn't make sense. And it's also a good idea to replace all of your control arms at some point with a 4" lift. You'll also need adjustable trackbars for the front and rear.

Third, don't use those control arms. If you're going to replace them (which you should replace all of them with a 4" lift) you should get Currie ones with the JJ or metalcloak ones with the duroflex joints.

Replace the shocks and start saving your money

I would replace the shocks and start saving some money too. I know that is never what we want to here but it is the truth. For the swimmy steering I would tighten everything up underneath and look at that damper/stabilizer it might (probably) needs replacing.
A good 4 inch lift (suspension) and all supporting hardware to do it properly is going to run you well over 1000 especially when you add in the SYE kit and drive shaft.

Also look into the DPG Offroad kits if you don't want to deal with the sye/cv shaft. You can run 33's with their TJ Ultimate Kit.

And I'll give it a third, save some more and do it right the first time. I know you've probably been saving for a long time since you've got $1,000 saved up. But look at it this way, would you rather flush a grand, and I'll say it again, one THOUSAND dollars, down the commode because you were impatient, or save up another $500 and do it all right the first time? That's my line of thought at least.

Thanks guys, I really appreciate the advice. Thanks! I am however, having a hard time understanding and am trying to learn. I have read nothing bad about this kit. Actually all raving reviews. What are the pitfalls of this kit? 4.25" TJ Combo Lift J25/J26 I swear, I am not trying to second guess your advice, just trying to learn a bit more about this world of lifting. :-D

Honestly there aren't any really. A jks front trackbar would be a good addition but other than that it's a pretty complete kit.
