Knocking noise when hitting bumps

I am wondering if the bushings need to be replaced in my front control arms.

Jeep Dad 05-14-2013 12:11 PM

I pushed send a little to quick-

Anyway, should I be able to move my control arms or are they supposed to be tight and not able to wiggle them?

UnlimitedLJ04 05-14-2013 12:21 PM

tight, no wiggles = good.
loose, lots of wiggles = bad.

Pretty much what Unlimited said. If you have any play in them the bushings are bad. You want them to be tight because they are bascially what holds your axle to your Jeep.

How much play is there in them? Sometimes you can grease them and that will eliminate the play if it's just minimal. Judging by the fact that you posted a thread it's porbably pretty bad though. Meaning you'll need to replace them.

Shoot me a PM with the type of C/A's you have and I can get you some bushings for them.

Mine does that too. Do you know how many you need for each it's my front lower control arm?

UnlimitedLJ04 05-14-2013 01:28 PM

if you don't need adjustable control arms to correct axle position, caster or pinion angle with a lift, then stick with buying new stock arms. they are cheap enough that messing with replacing the bushings is a waste of time. RockAuto has good prices on them.

Zach- I am only able to move them in a twisting fashion. When I grab the lower one on the driver side I can "twist" it about 1/8" either way. The jeep is a 2002 Wrangler X 4x4 with a 4.0 and manual trans.

Are you running stock C/A's or are they aftermarket? If you're getting 1/8" of play I'd look into replacing or upgrading them. If they're stock, I'd get stock ones again and be done with it. If you're running a lift kit, I'd look into getting a set of adjustable ones.

There are a number of great brands of Control Arms out there check out all the brands we carry and let me know if you have any questions.
