Questions about the NV3550

TJ's running well, although I think the bank 1 cat needs to be replaced.

I noticed when I shift gears there is a clunk (this is my first manual trans so I really don't know what's typical as far as anything goes). Also, when I'm shifting into say, 4th, and I let out the clutch, the Jeep kinda grabs and you can feel a bump when you get in the gas. If I remember correctly, my XJ did this as well. I'm going to swap the trans fluid to RP Synchromax, and I'm not sure what the PO had in it, or if they changed it regularly.

I always see people rebuilding their trans, should I be prepared for that pretty penny or does everything sound ok for me?

Sounds like the previous owner had a very bad habit of riding the clutch.. One never wants to use the throttle until the foot is off the clutch.. Same in 1st, I read from many members that skip 1st gear and take off in second, very bad habit.. On the flat, lift foot off clutch at idle, throttle up, same in 2,3,4 and 5th... Engage the gears matching RPMS, then throttle up.. There is roughly 500 RPMS between the 1st 4 gears.. If there aren't too many miles on it you may be able to re-break it in properly.. The 3550 is nearly indestructible... The synchros will wear out prematurely if they are worked too hard. Once you get good at matching RPMS to gears and speed, the clutch will be used as a helper for shifting... You get really good at it, you can shift without using the clutch.. Hope this helps..

I try to operate as smoothly as possible, I'm still getting used to the manual trans but I try not to ride the clutch. Only thing I'm still getting used to when it comes to clutch/gas is starting and stopping on hills in traffic which is never fun. As of yet, I haven't smelled any clutch burning.

What you're saying though is, there doesn't seem to be anything actually wrong with my trans?
