I want to paint my front tow hooks (how).?

Ive checked tge threads and couldnt find it. I want to take off the the front hooks, get my color DCR in a mopar paint rattle can and spray them. Inspired by the 10A, off course. Anyway any suggestions on removal of the hooks.

Lusus_Naturae 05-15-2013 05:50 AM

Take the bumper off, the hooks just slide out of the bumper once loose. Sand them up, throw some self etching primer on, and paint away.

Jeep4X4XFAR 05-15-2013 06:30 AM

I painted in place - didn't remove bumper. Just masked around tow hook opening and made sure I protected front of jeep and rest of bumper from overspray. Worked out fine.

When a person has tow hooks, the bumper cover cannot be removed without removing the entire bumper. This makes the process a bit longer. For this reason I used painters tape and newspaper and painted my tow hooks in place. When I paint my wife's tow hooks I'm going to budget time and remove the bumper as a learning experience.

Front bumper removal is about a 15 min process. Unplug the fog light harness, remove 8 bolts, and you're done...

Mykul 05-15-2013 01:21 PM

I painted mine when I took the bumper off to chop it.

tomthbomb 05-15-2013 02:15 PM

OK, why are we painting our tow hooks?

dawhitesJKU 05-15-2013 02:28 PM

there was a member who did it i believe last month. on the "what did you do to your JK today thread". subtle changes make it one off.

microage97 05-15-2013 02:40 PM

Mine are starting to show a little rust....

The same reason we bought vehicles with very little purpose or benefit besides going offroad: Because we f*cking wanted to.

So yes, I painted mine body color because it looks cool. But if anyone paints theirs red I think that will look great because the 10A already proved it...

I think I was that member. To take the bumper off, get under the jeep and take the 8 nuts off of the tow hook bolts and disconnect the dog lights. Then, you will be able to pull the bumper and the plastic outside off, but don't yet. There are 4 hateful plastic screws that I ended up beating out with a hammer that hold on the "skid plate" that must be removed. Once removed the bumper assembly can be taken apart. There are only 4 bolts holding the metal part to the plastic part, take those out and the metal bumper can be removed and the tow hooks taken out of the holes. To put back together, just reverse the steps, and BAM it's a completely new look haha. When you paint them just make sure they can dry completely because the plastic will rip any paint it touches off when you put it back on, I let mine dry for a day and a half and it still wasn't enough. I used rustoleum professional grade spray paint and primer. Sorry for the bad pictures my iPad doesn't take good ones...

^i was searching for ur post but I gave up after 20 pages. Lol for some reason i remember it took u a couple days to finish bcuz of itineraries. I was waiting patiently for the finished product.

legitposter 05-15-2013 03:34 PM

Red looks nice... But I'll stick with my body color commando green hooks. But my wife still needs hers painted. Perhaps red is in her billet future.

Yeah I was doing this in between studying for an AP Chemistry exam so it did take a while.

Could we get a list started to let everyone know what is ok to change and what we shouldn't touch so nobody breaks the rules when expressing their individuality?

I'm not sure I can find commando green in high-temp engine type paint. But not a bad idea!

Awesome response ^↑↑^
Thanks guys for all of the responses. I get to learn something on this job. (Taking off the bumper.)

idiot magnet 05-17-2013 02:18 AM

I don't have any tow hooks to paint... I feel so left out, but my D rings show a ton of wear from use on the trails and not from hitting a few grocery carts that got in my way...

I like it!

Are you going to do the rear hook as well?

Maybe I'll hit mine up with some plasti-dip. I almost wish the 10A's didn't come with red tow hooks because that is the color I would go with.

Deepjeep1371 05-17-2013 11:11 PM

Lucikly mine is red so I'll get the 10a look.

Sure, you go first.:D

grifoniqb 06-02-2013 08:16 AM

I love the idea! Once I saw the 10A. I bought hood decals for the arctic with orange outline with the idea of painting tow hooks orange.

Is it best to remove bumper or leave on and paint with bumper covered.

It comes down to time. If you got it then definately remove the bumper. No matter how good you are at taping, etc, its so easy to accidently get overspray on the jeep.

Ha, my Jeep is black so the tow hooks are already painted body color, and I just recently painted my muffler black because I got tired of the huge silver trashcan hanging there. Then I went and covered my black tow hooks and muffler with mud, why because it's my Jeep and I can.

How did you paint the shocks underneath? I would think you would have to raise it up. Also, is it mopar spray paint or plasti dip? Looks awesome! Nice job!

I removed the bumpers and used xo farm implement red back in march. I liked the way it looked against the black grill on the sand trooper II mopar Moab concept vehicle. Easy weekend project, but I don't see a problem with taping off either.
