1992 YJ goes into gear without clutch pushed down..

I have a 1992 YJ base model, I got it back in January. It's my first car, and my first stick shift.

We had been having issues with it where it wouldn't go into any gear while trying to drive it..we've been asking around and researching and haven't driven it anywhere for fear of getting stuck..

Well, I went out and sat in it (not running) and went through all the gears to see if it felt hard to shift..then I noticed something that's a major no-no. It EASILY goes in and out of gear without my foot even touching the clutch pedal. It's like the clutch is engaged the entire time when my foot isn't near the pedal.

Now I'm really concerned, because I know it's not supposed to do that. Me and my mom also noticed that the clutch pedal hangs down really low..not to the floor, I can still push it down, but it hangs lower than it normally does.

Anybody got any ideas as to what's going on?

When not running it is possible to shift through all gears without pushing in the clutch. If the pedal is low it may need adjusted. How is the fluid in the master cylinder?

^^^^^Zactly.....

Many suspects here, but low fluid in master, air in system (needs bled), slave cylinder leak, line leak, master leak.... in order of likelihood......

As said, if it shifts fine while parked in your driveway and engine off then you have a problem in the clutch system. Check the fluid first, if its low, that's your first problem, then figure out why its low...I think they Jeep switched to an external slave in 91 so its a little easier to check.

The hydraulic clutch fluid was low but not empty. We bought some from Napa and put it in and let it run for a few minutes. It went into all 5 gears and reverse but it felt kinda hard still, it wasn't smooth. The pedal is still hanging down and feels more sensitive to stalling.

Here's the clutch pedal (if you can't see the pictures it's because I'm on the phone app), it's kinda hard to tell but it hangs down lower than the brake.

Shifting thru gears while off is normal. However the pedal being low could be from air in the system. There is a bleeder screw on the drivers side of the tranny.
