Buying a '01 jeep at 100K miles. Good idea?
 
Not sure if this is the correct forum section to post this, but here goes:

I'm looking at the following jeep: 2001 Jeep Wrangler Sahara 4WD - PRICED REDUCED

What do ya'll think about purchasing a jeep at 100k miles? Can anyone comment on the recent mechanical services he had done to it and if this is a good deal?

I'd say go for it. Sounds like it was well maintained and taken care of. Buying a Wrangler at 100k miles is nothing. The 4.0 is a beast of an engine, mine is at 220k and change and runs like it came off the line yesterday. As long as it was well maintained (which it sounds like it was) I think it's a good buy. Just my $0.02.

Nice clean lil Jeep, I'd still have someone familiar with Jeeps and Jeep repair that You trust look it over before handing over any money. I think you can get it for under 10k also ;)

I bought my 2001 TJ with a 100K miles or 184K KM last summer, not an issue IF it was taken care prior. Tho I paid 6.5K $ for mine, over 10K$ is abit high but US prices seem over inflated compared to Canadian prices. Also, looking closer, it prolly has a dana44 in the back but not a 35 in the front. most likely a dana30. Also, question him WHY he's selling it... after 3 years and only 20K extra miles?? weird.

My 99 TJ had 143k miles in it and I didn't hesitate. The engine had been replaced at 100k, too - so I look at it as 43k miles :)

Clean Jeep..I wouldn't pay over $9000 for it (don't pay for the add-ons). Also he seems confused as to what axles it really has, so check for you self.

In the ad the seller says he's moving across the country and doesn't need it.

Didn't the 2001 have some problems with it? Maybe someone that knows more about this can shed some light on this matter.

I live in Hawaii and just bought and 02 with 85000 miles on it for 8000. I agree I wouldn't pay over ten thousand. He may have a loan on it and need to pay it off. Looks like it's pretty stock and that is good because you can do what you want. Be sure to check for leaks, especially in the bell housing area, listen for the classic tick (so start it cold), make sure the 4wd works and transfer linkage is good. Mine seemed great the day I bought I and two weeks later I had it in the shop because I overlooked the front brake calipers and the front right ended up sticking. Just empty every pocket. Remember that before you buy lol. It looks pretty clean. I MIGHT offer ten. But shoot for nine.

I own a 2001 TJ, but its the 60th Edition version. No issues a side from regular wear and tear since owning it last summer.

Just turned 140,000 Mi. on our '01 Sport W/5spd. No major problems. Nothing I could not replace my self. It is a very well made machine. If I was looking for a TJ 100,000 mi. would not worry me. Over all condition would be a consideration.

Wow! Great advice from everyone! Thank you. I'm going to have a jeep-only shop take a look at it. The shop charges $200 for a compression and leak down test if I wanted, but a general inspection is no charge. Worth it to get the compression and leak down test?
RE: the Dana axles, if it is a 30 instead of 35 in the front, is that bad?

Thanks again. I think I can get it for 9500 since I'll likely have to get a 100K service job on it once I purchase it. Carfax checks out - score of 96.

It's priced too high & KBB should be K-BS. Their prices are inflated & not realistic to loan value or black book. Anyway a lot depends on your region & unfortunately for you the time of year. I bought my 01 with a 129K, hard top, full doors, dana 44, other bells & whistles, etc for just over 7 grand. Looks clean, but I wouldn't consider going over 8.

As for the front axle the guy was just uninformed/misinformed. All except the Rubicon came with D30 in the front. The D35 is a rear axle in TJs that came without the D44 optional axle.

This jeep has been for sale for a very long time and i think he has been giving the same price every time. I go on CL every couple of days looking around at the different jeeps on there to get ideas and see what kind of junk people try to sell for lots of $$$ and do I dare say looking for a JK to buy.:hide:
The price is way too high even for CA and the bay area. That price is about as much as rubi tj would be going for with that many miles. I would try to get him down to 8K or something. Tell him that all the "upgrades and rebuilt" items don't add nearly as much as you pay to the price.

If you want to spare the money, it won't hurt, though the way it's likely been maintained, I doubt it's warranted. The Dana 30 in the front isn't necessarily a bad thing. That's stock and can handle up to 35" tires no problem. I didn't comment in the price earlier, since price can fluctuate between regions and time of year. The Jeep that I bought last year for $6,500 I could drive two hours into another town, price it at 8, and have people looking at it tomorrow. Seems a little high to me, but summer's starting and they might be going a little higher in your area to begin with. All in all, it's a clean looking Jeep, I'd have no worries about making the purchase if the general inspection checks out.
