$8000 to paint my Jeep!?

Like the title says...I'm floored. Ever since I bought my 2013 jk I've always loved and wanted Mango Tango (wasn't offered in 2013). After calling 3 places, my average quote was $8000. Granted that was to do it "like the factory" which entails taking every piece off and doing it right, but wow...

The guy was straight up with me. He said people just don't do complete paint jobs anymore. Better off trading it in and starting over.

WTF!!

PS - All quotes were in the North Dallas Area

Sounds about right. Paint jobs are super expensive! An entire color change is a lot of work because they take it down to the metal. Its just not worth it. So what color did you end up with? Crush?

DC Dennis 05-15-2013 05:10 PM

Cheaper than getting a Ferrari painted. What price point were you expecting to get it like the factory paint? You could go to Macco for less than an 1/8th the price, but you won't get a factory quality job.

Also need to consider that with a jeep you will want the very complicated surfaces of the interior preped and painted.

All these cable TV shows that have popped up since Pimp My Ride make it look simple to do, and it is if you don't mind traces of the original color showing.

I ended up with Black but I'm already sick of it. In Texas my head feels like an oven when the suns out beating down on that roof and it never ever ever looks clean.

Looks like I'm either going to have it lined now or I'll trade it in when I see what 2014 has to offer. My dealer trade in price was very reasonable.

dawhitesJKU 05-15-2013 05:15 PM

price is about right. i spent about 5k on a paintjob (gunmetal pearl w/ diamond clearcoat) for my import during my hot import night days. quite frankly, it was just a waste of several months paycheck.

Thats what I would do. The paint job just simply isnt worth it. Hopefully there will be some new cool colors in 2014!

panthermark 05-15-2013 05:24 PM

You wanted Mango Tango (which hasn't been offered since 2011)...but you ended up with black...in Texas? How did you manage that?

Trade in in bro.... Copperhead looks pretty sweet for 2014...and might be close to Mango Tango...

ohioviper 05-15-2013 05:25 PM

$500 worth of paint and materials and $7500 worth of labor Im guessing.Yea thats a lot of money and no way is it worth it. If it were an older Jeep that didnt have to be perfect you could do it yourself in a couple of days and for cost of materials.

enjerhoo 05-15-2013 05:25 PM

I'll rattle can a car before taking it to MAACO.

Worthless. They totally screwed up my Mustang about 14 years ago.

3K in 1999 dollars & the paint had dirt and started peeling after a year.

Not to mention that it was stolen out of their parking lot in the process.

NEVER HAVE MAACO PAINT ANYTHING! EVER!

JeeperJake 05-15-2013 05:30 PM

I just had a quote from a reputable pro on doing a special utility trailer project. He said he was about floored when they told him the cost of the paint was $800/gal!!!!

In any case, my plans changed.

I had Maaco paint a Ferrari 308gt4 about 20 years ago. It was actually a decent job since I did a TON of prep work myself.

I agree. I had a '70 Challenger painted white by MAACO (didn't think anyone could mess that up). I had to have it repainted elsewhere.

legitposter 05-15-2013 06:12 PM

$8000 for a paint job plus you've lowered the vehicle's value later on. Plus there WILL be spots where a paint job is obvious. That's how it always is, no matter how great the paint job is.

The references to MAACO are funny... So true... I had a cr@p car that I got painted there for $200. The paint job was so bad that it made $200 actually seem like a ripoff! In fact I put a 'stop' on the check I wrote them. It was that terrible, I couldn't pay for something that I had to stare at and regret everyday. That place is a joke.

JKBrad 05-15-2013 06:38 PM

Trade it. You'll be money ahead. Or you could get it wrapped for about 1/4-1/3 of that.

pianoman90 05-15-2013 06:41 PM

I would only pay that much by knowing that the shop did quality work. Take a look at some of their past cars or projects. There's a lot more to painting a car than just spraying paint...prep is huge and can make or break it.

Dragonscape 05-15-2013 06:43 PM

have it wrapped in silver carbon fiber
You'll love it and it will be very unique

JackedUpMedic 05-15-2013 06:44 PM

Or if your adventurous enough wrap it yourself for around $600 in materials.

ky77 05-15-2013 08:33 PM

Wrap or trade it. Painting at that price just seems like a waste of a lot of money

x2

WesterM3 05-15-2013 09:36 PM

paint

I'd either vinyl wrap it something really unique, or even get it professionally bedlined in a unique color.

brighton 05-15-2013 09:55 PM

I love my Mango Tango but no way is it worth an $8000 markup.

If you don't have much invested in mods, I'd be looking to trade it in for a 2014 in a color you like.

tontwins 05-15-2013 10:00 PM

Yea for that money get a custom color no one else has... I was waxing my 2dr jk the other day... Not much paint on it anyways ha

Wow, that's a quick turn-around time on your 2013...use that $8k towards your new 2014!! :)

legitposter 05-16-2013 12:43 AM

Its true that a unique color, like that beautiful dark gold they put on some Compass' in the past year, would look very nice. Or a burnt orange... Or a fancy high class blue, like the 350Z had, if you know what I mean.

Like everyone else says, just trade it in.

Back in the day I had MAACO do a $99 paint job on my 79' CJ5. I did all the bondo work but I thought it turned out great.

Old Dogger 05-16-2013 07:07 AM

Danny on CC "Counting cars" in Vegas will cherry out your body and then you get show quality paint for $7,500. It's only money! This would be great for a Mall Crawler...............
If you want quality, then he's your man!!!

blw2000 05-16-2013 11:01 AM

Not worth it for just a color change! A restoration, maybe, but not for a personal preference. I was thinking of getting a Mango, but when I saw it in person didn't like it (I wanted a more metallic type of color). You might pay 8K and decide two years later you want Gecko!

Rubi4Life 05-16-2013 11:26 AM

Yeah, you have it about right, get a new one or get creative, not huge on Line-xing the outside but I have seen it done, if you offroad a lot, it might be worth the consideration. good thing with factory black is that any line-x color would work White to reflect the brutal Texas sun and cool your Jeep down, or even your orange, then you can use the factory black as accents and do not need full coverage.

Good Luck.

NFRs2000NYC 05-16-2013 02:38 PM

Sounds right for a quality job. The more complicated the car is to strip, the more money the job will cost, consider yourself lucky the jeep is easy to strip. If you had an S class, it would cost double that.
