Urgent Question For JK Owners!!

i am about to purchase my first jeep. an 07 2 door x model 6 speed with 104k miles. when i test drove it, the first thing i noticed was a loud "tick" that seemed to get faster as i accelerated. i didn't notice a tick when i let my foot off the gas. the owner said it was an exhaust leak. a few days after test driving it, i told him i wanted to have it looked over before anything was done. i talked to the mechanic today. he said the ticking sound was coming from the engine, and that it was 1 1/2 quarts low of oil. the owner said he had recently changed the oil. at highway speeds, the shifter shakes back and forth very bad. i've owned/drove many manual transmissions, and have never felt a shifter shake back and forth like this. the mechanic said that it could because the tires need balancing

i am very nervous to buy this jeep now. i would like to hear from people who own jk's. especially ones with 100,000+ miles.

Don't buy it. Find another one!

This. For how much? I have an awesome CJ for sale that doesn't do that ;P

laollis 05-16-2013 04:56 PM

Don't buy it. Find another one. My '99 Wrangler never did any of those things.

TeleMark 05-16-2013 04:57 PM

Run.

JeeperJake 05-16-2013 04:57 PM

^^^Agree....unless you are confident of your mechanical skills and unlimited charge account at the parts depot.........

laollis 05-16-2013 04:57 PM

oopps..didn't mean for that to post twice. I tried to edit, but goofed.

Blastek 05-16-2013 05:00 PM

those engines are known to burn oil.

the shifter shaking is 100% normal. it's a top-loader unit, so the shaft is connected directly to the top of the transmission. The jeep is body-on-frame with some super sloppy (flexible) mounts and suspension to improve its off-road abilities. add that all together and you get a good amount of shaking.

walk away from this one because of the tick.

The owner is asking $10k.

You can get a WHOLE LOTTA TJ for 10K with the I6 a very proven motor......if I could think of something faster than run I would tell you......!!!!!

music_man185 05-16-2013 05:13 PM

The tick is so loud, it's hard to believe it's coming from the engine. My girlfriend could hear it from her car when i pulled up

I wouldn't even considering that one especially at that price.

my engine makes that tick sound and has done so since day one, i have an 07 Sahara. i run 10-w30 full synthetic :hide: and that reduces the tick a bit. Mine also consumes oil and the shifter shakes at speed. Its your call but i'd say if you're nervous then walk on. there are other units to be had. always go with your gut.

Jeeps_and_Boats 05-16-2013 05:38 PM

Doesn't sound like a good idea.

CrazyBull 05-16-2013 05:52 PM

I have a 12' and yes the shifter shakes but that's just the mount..new or not new tires. Tick is bad though. Don't risk going for a bad motor.

music_man185 05-16-2013 05:57 PM

Thanks for the info. I feel extremely disappointed. I've always wanted a wrangler, and I love the look of the jk's. This was the first jk I found in my price range. I was beyond excited when I thought I was about to get a jk.

RUN AWAY, RUN very fast!

100k is nothing for a 3.8 that is taken care of. But someone trying to sell something and not even making sure it is toped off with oil says a lot about how they took care of it to me. Personally I would pass, people don't try to sell a Jeep cheap out of the kindness of there heart.

jkjeeper06 05-16-2013 07:06 PM

I'd also pass on this jk. But the oldest ones are almost 7 years old now so there are many for sale and you can probably find others. My guess is the guy had no idea the jeep doesn't take 5 qts, it takes 6 or even a little more depending on your filter.

I'd just look for a different jk. There are tons out there. Idk if you've tried Craigslist, but buying straight from the owner will save you money and also give him more money at the same time

Dragonscape 05-16-2013 07:08 PM

Go and buy that Jeep... if you want to spend more time in the shop than on the trail
also, expect to spend your mod money on repairs to keep it running. What you have described so far adds up to a new clutch possibly the whole assembly, the throw out bearing is getting ready to let go, the tick will require a "valve job" which will affect other things and the low oil at 100K means the main bearings are well worn or could just throw a rod.
Good News: if its cheap enough its ideal to swap out a new hemi, some pro-rock 60 axles and a few other mods.

JerryJeepster 05-16-2013 07:09 PM

Keep this in mind. Start low with your offer. Let the seller counter the offer. You can never go back down.

music_man185 05-16-2013 07:38 PM

Even though the mechanic said it was an engine tick, I can't help but wonder if it's something rattling instead. It's just so loud. It seems worse at lower rpm's, especially when taking off

Seriously? Is this the only jeep left in your area? I have taught my kids that if you question something like you are, it's best to move on. Ticks, rattles and shakes are never good. Find a different one already.

rebelman 05-16-2013 07:52 PM

Wow, that does like a lot of $$ for that, avoid the ticking.

redbilly 05-16-2013 07:58 PM

Don't buy this Jeep. Leaking that much oil after a recent oil change is a problem.... That thing has been driven hard and put up wet!

LewdDude 05-16-2013 08:06 PM

my 08 started making that noise and the number 4 and 6 bearings were shot! $5600 repair!!!! RUN from the 3.8's

wat3rdog 05-16-2013 08:20 PM

Get either a tj with a 4.0L or a 12-13 with the new motor IMO.

music_man185 05-16-2013 08:29 PM

Thanks again for all the help. My girlfriends dad is also a mechanic. He drove it this evening. It didn't make the noise immediately. He thought there was nothing there. But eventually, it started. He parked it and looked under the hood and said it was definitely an engine tick.

I guess part of me kept questioning it because in my mind, I had already bought it. I have been picturing myself driving it this weekend all week long.

I don't think all the 3.8's are as bad - the 3.6 hasn't exactly started out with a spotless record lol.

Just treat it right and it will probably last you. If I went to buy one tho and it ticked like that I wouldn't even consider it. I had a tick like that in a TJ at 140k miles and once then engine was apart it look like someone dropped a hand grenade in it. I had a piston skirt in pieces.
