Urgent!! No Keys

Hello Everyone,

I purchased my first Jeep - a 2011 Unlimited Rubicon from an auction and received it today

It didn't come with a key and the driver side tire is flat. The car is at the body shop now. Had to get it off the trailer with a fork lift

So I called the dealership today for keys - and they said that I will have to bring the car at the dealership to program it. Is it true ??

I drive a BMW and lost the key a month ago - I just had to call the dealership, give my vin and they delivered it to me the next day.

Please let me know. Don't how will I take the car in this condition to the dealer.

Thanks in advance,
Paul j

They should be able to get you a plain key. My buddy just went thru this with his VW Golf.

This isn't really an answer to your question, but I'm very curious what you paid for that? Sorry to hear about the key troubles though

Long story short, yes, you will have to take it to the dealership (sorry). Sign up for AAA? FWIW, a tow will probably run $60-100. Maybe you could call and sweet talk the dealer into picking it up if you purchase a mopar mod or two (or they could just want your future business).

At least on my '13, a non programmed key will open the doors from the keyholes on the door, but won't start the car.

Programming the key requires a 'pairing' process with the engine computer.

Check with a reputable Locksmith shop... a friend of mine here is a locksmith and can make chipped keys from his mobile shop... maybe you can find one to come to the Jeep.

Tell the transport driver to give you the darn key! He didn't push it onto the trailer.

That sucks! I would be interested in what you paid for it too.

Good thinking. :)

My 2010 Wrangler Unlimited only came with one key. I obviously wanted a spare. So I went to the Jeep dealer. All said and done they wanted a little over $200 for a new key! Luckily a friend stopped me & sent to a local locksmith. He made me a spare from a blank that will unlock the doors and start the Jeep. The only thing is it doesn't have the buttons to unlock the doors. So if you lock the doors with the real key & unlock it with the spare the alarm will go off. But it stops as soon as you start it. And now to the good part. It was only $50!

Thanks for the replies. Will try to talk to someone at the dealership.

I paid 16K with transport. 14500 miles on it.

Need to replace:
Airbags
Driver side fender
Driver side door
Windshield
And repaint the whole thing

Luckily the engine is fine.

Good luck w/the project and try and post some pics. My '08 arrived on a transport with a blown engine, rotten top and 4 different sized tires- I learned a lot on this forum that helped with the rebuild.

I just bought a 2011 Wrangler too, and it only came with one key. I know that I can order a spare uncut key for about $20 online, and can get it cut at Lowes or wherever. From what I am reading though, I need 2 good keys to program the third one? Did you run into that? I don't have power locks so it is just a regular key.

Thanks,

Justin
