Paint on the hinges bubbling

Went naked the other fay for the first time this year. As I was putting the doors back on:( I noticed that the paint on the hinges was starting to bubble. Anyone else have this issue? Took it to the dealership and after a week I called to check on it. I was told that they were waiting to hear from Chrysler about rust on the door under the hinge. Three days later I was told "tomorrow" it would be ready. Tomorrow comes and I called to check and was told that there was dust in the paint and that it would be ready "tomorrow". Again tomorrow came and as I am pulling into the lot, the phone rings. It's the body shop calling to tell me there is a chip in the new paint. On closer inspection it wasn't a chip some knucklehead got a little too eager with a buffer. Makes for a VERY unhappy camper.

I literally just saw this exact same thing on my door hinges! I have a 2012 that I have owned or exactly 1 year. I was furious today. Did the dealership give you any trouble when you brought it in regarding wanting to repair it?

KingZ 05-18-2013 10:41 PM

Noticed the same thing on my 2010.

blackforestgreen 05-18-2013 10:52 PM

common problem on jk models. dealers will just repaint and will happen again after warranty. many take hinges off and bedline them. problem solved.

I wonder why it issued popping up on the hinges. How is moisture getting in there?

Williard86 05-18-2013 11:32 PM

It's not moisture. It's because the door is steel and the hinge is aluminum. Theirs no paint between them and when the two metals touch, it causes oxidation.

kjeeper10 05-19-2013 04:37 AM

Common on all wranglers. Google "mirror mod"
It's a small hole drilled in the mirror base that lets water out and prevent its from streaming down over the hinges.
From what I understand it works well.

Fwiw ... My hinges are a mess. Planning to bedline at some point.

8figgas 05-19-2013 05:46 AM

Tape them off and Bedline them, simple as that...

ibrown3005 05-19-2013 08:01 AM

Bedliner is my plan if it pops up again. Dealership didn't give me any problems when I first went in to ask about it. It was maddening however with the mistakes made, all of which were avoidable.

rirrgang 05-19-2013 08:23 AM

It's corrosion, not a paint problem. My pass front side has it. So does one of the hood hinges.

dwindeck 05-19-2013 08:58 AM

I'm pretty sure a TSB has been put out on this and will be fixed FOC.

TSB was out for this in late 07-08 due to improper metal prep used at the factory. Mine were re-done 3 years ago under warranty and problem has not recurred.

Reviving this thread. Just noticed paint bubbling up on my driver side front door top hinge. Barely a year old. 2012 JKUR. I have a list of things that need to be addressed so Ill add it to the list and take it in soon.

Glad you brought it up again. I have the same problem on the same door. It's the same vehicle and same age as well. Let us know how it goes when you bring it in.

On my 2009 2dr all the door hinges bubbled and both hood hinges too.
As long as its in the 3yr bumper to bumper warranty they'll fix it.
The body shop did a great job on mine.
Otherwise u can bedline, paint, plastidip or cover them with hinge covers.

element4all 07-21-2013 10:42 AM

i just had my drivers side door repainted, and they made sure to paint door and hindge then assemble it so there is a layer of paint between the parts.

Paint on outer panels should be warrantied for 5 years or 100,000 miles so guys who are out of your 3 year 36 warranty dont give up yet.

david.w.johnson 07-22-2013 05:45 AM

My 2008 had it on all hinges when I bought it. When the wife returns to the States in a couple of weeks, I'm going over to the autoshop to use their airhammer to remove all hinges and re-finish. It is corrosion. I don't trust the dealers in the US, let alone the ones in Belgium. I'll fix it and it will be done right.

Good to know.

Galvanic corrosion.

Two dissimilar metals can become an anode/cathode combination and with the addition of slightly acidic rain, corrosion and bubbling of the paint can occur.

The Navy has it all the time with their aluminum hulled ships and steel propulsion shafts.

Anti-corrosion perforation limited warranty..

Hinges would have to bubble to the point there was a hole through..

This is why I got mine fixed with in the 3 year warranty period.
The door hinges were bubbling, while very minor, while it was brand new on the dealership lot. I had them put into the service history that I have pointed out the problem upon purchase. Good thing I did because after 2 yrs the bubbling was real bad. And they did try to deny my claim, fortunately my service advisor was on my side, plus the complaint on the service record. I also pointed out to the service manager that perforation or not, that I am in the 3yr bumper to bumper warranty period, this is a defect and I demand it be fixed.
I think you'll have more fire power on your side if you're in the 3yr warranty period and insist on it being repaired. It's an expensive repair job, because it is labor intensive, especially if they do it correctly, and Daytona Dodge auto mall body shop did an excellent job.
