Back to black??? Plastics

Anyone have any ideas on how to get the oxidation from the sun out of your fenders and bumpers??

I've heard of something called back to black but I'm just not sure I can trust it, I'm sure many of you have dealt with this issue.

Beastmaster 05-18-2013 09:59 PM

Yes, Mother's Back-to-Black works great for that, I've used is several times myself.

I used it also. At 1st it didn't look like it was doing anything so I quit using it. The next morning when I came outside it had done just what it was supposed to. Must take a bit to set in? But it does work!

Hi folks, I have never used Back to Black... how does it compare to the 303 Aerospace Protectant? Thanks.

Miser 05-19-2013 02:38 AM

The fenders on my 2003 TJ were so bad, they were almost a light gray. Two coats of the Back to Black really rubbed in brought them back to a dark Black, they looked like new. It was amazing!
I like the 303 better for the hard top, but not the fenders. Back to Black is the best for the fenders. In Arizona, because of our strong sun, required a repeat application about every 6 months.
Back to Black is available in just about any auto parts store like O'Riley's.
Aerospace 303 protectant is great for protecting your hard top, available at Ace Hardware.

How long does back to black last? One wash and i need to apply it again?

Brewbek 05-19-2013 09:32 AM

I think both products are good stuff, but 303 is being proactive, Back to Black reactive. I use 303 regularly and have had good results. :punk:

My experience using it for about 2 years was to reapply when needed, in my case that was about every 6 months.:)
When applying, make sure that you rub it in really good! Two coats.

axhoaxho 05-19-2013 02:17 PM

Thanks folks, for explaining the usage of the Back to Black and 303, I will use both accordingly.

RB-10rubicon 05-19-2013 03:44 PM

I dont know know about back to black but 303 has uv blockers in it

ONETANGO 05-19-2013 03:54 PM

I have not tried btb yet just cause mine is still new. But I am using Surf City Garage Black Max to try and prevent mine from turning grey. It has uv protection in it. And it makes the fenders and bumpers look like showroom new. Good stuff.

Agree with this. I use both products, but 303 applied regularly will prevent black plastic from turning grey. I'm in the Florida sun, and my fenders, rear bumper, door handles, even soft top still look like new after 3 years. Where Back to Black has been helpful for me is removing mud stains from the fenders. I still follow up with a treatment of 303 though for the UV protection.

horrocks007 05-19-2013 04:30 PM

I've used both Btb and the cheaper turtle equivalent, and found both work very well. You will need to re-apply every month or so.

roxbury29 05-19-2013 07:11 PM

Mothers B2B, usually I need to re-apply about every 6-8 weeks.. depending on the weather :)

Blackpony04 05-19-2013 08:45 PM

I highly recommend Turtle Wax Trim Restorer over B2B and I used the latter exclusively for years. The TW simply lasts longer and you use less.

Arod_3 05-21-2013 10:09 AM

my bumpers were faded pretty bad. I used Meguiar's Ultimate Black and they look brand new!

Now here is the funny thing: I used B2B on my truck for years- and it prevented the black trim from turning grey. Exact opposite. LOL. I think the key is to use one or the other- or the black WILL fade.
I do agree on the mud: for some reason B2B works better for mud/dirt protection. For the betterment of all Jeep kind I sprayed one fender with each and went out in search of a mud puddle. (Its not easy; it never rains here).
The 303 side needed a nylon brush- the B2B- a good scrub with a sponge. So I use B2B on all trim/fenders. I DO use 303 on my soft top since B2B doesn't say anything about fabric on the bottle.

I haven't had to restore anything on my JK yet (it was built in Feb) but I used Back to Black on my TJ and then on my LJ. It works great. I just bought some of the Turtle Wax to see how that works on my wife's Caravan.

Blastek 05-21-2013 01:15 PM

My JK is almost exactly 1 year old. I've used B2B twice. It looks great for a few weeks, but my fenders, bumpers, and door handles are already fading fast.

enjerhoo 05-21-2013 01:17 PM

not an issue here since I do not have black fenders or hard top. :D

maybe on the mirrors though :whistling:

BacaraJKU 05-21-2013 02:15 PM

I was using meguiars natural shine protectant, but hated how it washed off and was greasy. I wanted a low shine look that was black. Used B2B and the fenders have a nice low shine, non-greasy look that is deep black. Will be washing the Jeep next week after the dunes in MX so will see how it holds up. I plan to use B2B every couple of months. I live in AZ, work at home and park in a garage so my jeep doesn't see to much sun. Jeep is coming up on 12 months old.

For hardtop I've been using meguiars quick wax spray and love the nice clean look it gives the black hardtop. Others have been using the TW black crystal spray or something like that.

mikebot 05-21-2013 02:31 PM

2013 JKUR on order. Hoping to regularly apply *something* to prevent the black plastic fenders and hard top from "going grey" like my 2001 Grand Cherokee's skirt. Sounds like 303 Aerospace would be the best choice as a preventative? The wipes seem like a nice option and would be easy to apply post-wash.

Scott2373 05-21-2013 02:45 PM

I've found that any tire black spray works quite well. I used it on the mirrors, "Tupperware" light bar and roof rack on my Liberty Renegade. It worked wonders and lasted for years with one application.

Rmiller31 05-21-2013 02:51 PM

Back to black only works for so long. In the past with my TJ I just repainted them. You can do it with them still on just mark off the body and put magazine pages between the flare and the body and paint away.

This is also my concern. I figured there are enough Jeeps with aftermarket fenders and takeoffs I could pick some up cheap if needed down the road. Not really interested in flat fenders since I'm only doing modest upgrades.

SaharasotaJK 05-21-2013 05:29 PM

I used Back to Black and it works fine but it takes 2-3 coats and have to redo every 2 months, switched to Meguires Ultimate Black only takes one coat to get same results, and last about 4-5 months here in FL.

SoCaljeep08 05-30-2013 09:36 PM

Mothers it is!! Thanks guys!

mikebot 08-13-2013 09:05 AM

Just put a layer of Meguire's Ultimate Black on all the unpainted black plastic on my brand new 2014 JKUR. Looks great, and was easy to apply!
