Grade 8 NUTS

Hi guys. I have some questions on grade 8 NUTS. Notice I said NUTS. I am well aware of how to identify a grade 8 BOLT, I'm just curious about nut identification. I'm also wondering how important a grade 8 nut would be. I'm thinking a grade 5 would be fine depending on which way the shear force is applied. Thoughts?????

Typically the Grade 8 nuts will have the gold finish like the grade 8 bolts assuming they don't have a coating (zinc). The benefit of the GR8 nut in my opinion is if they are located in a place you can't get socket or box wrench. A open end or crescent could round a GR5 but the hardness of the GR8 might help prevent it. If I weld a nut to something I ALWAYS use the GR8... Others may have their own opinion...

Thanks man! I agree the Grade 8's are usually w/ the gold finish.... But not always. X2 on the rounding over. Nice point. I guess my question is how do I truly know I've got a grade 8? Markings??

Afaik, there its no markings on the nuts or washers.. I've only seen gold finish grade 8 so they was how I always identified them..

No such animal as a Grade 8 Nut. Check here: http://www.americanfastener.com/tech...ings_steel.asp

The nuts to be used with Grade 8 fasteners are almost always gold colored and have a digit or number stamped on one side.

Always use these nuts and washers on Grade 8 bolts.

Nice link. Unfortunately it just leads to more questions. Clearly those nuts are graded. Back to my original question... Again, none of those gradings, correlate w/ bolt gradings. Could you help me out w/ bolt Vs. nut grading?

You're right, those are being sold as grade 8 nuts. I just posted up the link to the standard set by other folks

FWIW, this is what a grade 8 nut looks like

I went out and checked the Gr.8 nut drawer in my garage, and they look like this.:thumb:

My honest apology for arguing with you online. It is entirely possible that the link to the table I posted has an incomplete listing from ASTM, SAE & ISO.

There are grade 8 and grade 5 nuts and various other grades as well. A cursory search turned this up which will help and there is a more complete version that I've seen and don't feel like looking for.

Grades 5 and 8 Finished Hex Nuts

I buy and use specified grade 8 and 5 nuts on a weekly basis.
