Throttle Position Sensor Problems
 
Yesterday I began having idle issues with my 98 2.5 liter. Revs high then drops to 1500 then high again. When I unplugged the TPS, my idle settled down where it should be, plug it back in and it goes wild again. Today I changed the TPS and still have the same symptoms. I have discovered that by unhooking the battery for 10 minutes or so, then starting up again, the idle is as it should be , until I drive, at which time it begins to rev around 2500 again.
Do I need to leave the power disconnected longer in order for the computer to reset itself ? Is there something Im missing ?

If swapping out the TPS doesn't solve the issue then the TPS probably isn't the real problem, rather it is a result of something else. Have you checked to see what OBD codes are present?

I had a case where I had to install 3 different TPS's before I got one that would work properly. Since then (7 years), it has operated without issue.

Just disconnecting the battery cables will not reset your codes. This needs to be done with an OBD code reader. To check for codes; turn off the engine, then turn the ignition switch on (not to start) then off three times in succession. then look to the odometer readout for error codes that it may be throwing.

Ive tried the ignition trick a few times now but it doesnt present any codes, just shows my mileage. Is it normal for a new TPS to take some time begin sending correct info to the computer ? Shouldnt a new sensor begin to work and correct the problem upon installation and first fire up of the engine ?

The ignition trick won't work on 98, 99 and 2000 models.

I've had 3 new TPS in the last 6 months. First 2 were after-market junk, 3rd was Mopar and is still working OK.
Had varying reactions from the Jeep after replacing TPS.
Sometimes the PCM needs resetting, sometimes not.

I've always done the following to reset the PCM/clear codes.
Disconnect positive lead from battery.
Touch disconnected positive lead to negative on battery to drain capacitors.
Reconnect positive lead.
Turn ignition on - make sure Jeep does not crank.
Turn headlights on
Turn headlights off
Turn ignition off.
Good to go.
Jeep may run rough for a few moments but will smooth itself out.

when I cleaned my throttle plate, I had to remove the t.p.s.
when I put it back on it idled high.
I put it on and tweaked it one way and it settled down.
tightened it down and all was good.
It was the same t.p.s. that I started with.
It threw the code for low voltage when I ran it with the t.p.s. taken off

What do you mean you "tweaked it" ? As far as I can see it only installs one way with no adjustments.

Jay, sorry it took so long to respond,
I merely twisted the sensor, while it was loosely bolted on, clockwise and then counter, with the direction of movement of the throttle plate,
until the throttle seemed right, sounded right, felt right.

If you bought your new TPS from an auto parts store, that could be your problem. Get and OEM sensor if you can.
