White powder on my alternator?

Is it some sort of rust?
Curious, have it on the right-angle tube cover to my thermostat also.

Anyone seen this? How to clean it? WD 40? Coke? Just wire brush it off?

Alternator seems to function just fine......it's purely cosmetic, but sure does look crappy.

Its just corrosion(aluminums rust ;)...) , perfectly normal
I wouldn't worry about getting it off at all...

If I had to make a guess it is alkali build up, possibly from road dust.

It is aluminum oxide. The aluminum equivalent of rust. I would not worry about it. If you really care hit it with a wire brush and spray it down with a rattle can clear coat.

When some metals oxidize they produce a white powder, others produce rust. Usually alloys corrode as a white residue

DocterWrangler 05-20-2013 09:19 PM

I wouldn't worry about it, its not gonna hurt anything. Electric connection cleaners would work to clean it if you want to remove the residue. Do not spray it into the unit tho

KillerKustums 05-21-2013 07:11 AM

Yeah it's just oxidation.

Alot more prevalent around sea side comunities, not so common in midwest / desert areas. I'm no chemist, but I'd guess it could have alot to do with the amount of salt in the air.

AppleRock 05-21-2013 08:35 AM

Thanks for all the responses. Not near the ocean though, but guess just the humidity in the air is enough to cause it.

Neil F. 05-21-2013 08:42 AM

For what it's worth, humidity is not going to cause aluminum alloys to corrode. Contaminates will. Western Mass, I'd assume they use road salt in the winter. That is a catalyst for corrosion.

Sounds like maybe it has a cocaine habit
