Manual transmission sound

Hi all! Just recently purchased 2006 Rubicon with 6 spd manual trans. My question to all the jeep gurus out there is, should this be making any noise as I shift? It's not all the time, especially if I make a smooth transition. I have always driven a manual and this one seems a bit like it has slack in it and I hear a clanky sound sometimes when I shift. Which kind of makes me cringe. The up side is I was told by the dealership I have a 5 year 100,000 mile warranty with trans, eng, power train, A/C etc. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

If you have a warranty take it in and tell them about the problem. I am not sure what the problem is based on your description but since you have experience driving a stick, these trannies are just like any other transmission out there. Nothing really quirky about them in the realm you are speaking of. Take it in would be your best choice.

Yeah, to be honest I really don't know all the details of the warranty. I purchased jeep after working a 12hr night shift and drive 3 hours. I was a bit out of it. So I thought I would just see what kind of response I got here. I've had the jeep less than a week. I'll do a more thorough analysis sometime this week. But as I was driving to work today I noticed it was making a noise when I would push in the clutch. But then again it might be as simple as removing this CB antenna that isn't very secure on the back. But it sounds a bit loud for it to be that easy.

Is it the driveline slack at low speeds (like if you release the clutch quick going slow) or does it do it faster too?

Yuda 05-20-2013 09:52 PM

Yeah when I'm going slow usually only during the first 3 gears

It's a truck transmission, it's clunky. You're going to have to live with it.

Is there any slack in your draft shaft/u- joints?

Yup, it bangs around for sure. 50k miles.

Lando25 how would I go about checking if there is any slack in my "draft shaft/u- joints"? Thanks

Yuda 05-21-2013 04:34 AM

Additional details jeep has 85k, also I'm familiar with driving a jeep. Owned a 86' cj-7 bought in 2003 and it's manual transition didn't clank this loud :-)

Just get underneath it and move and twist everything to check for looseness and excessive play.
