Threads on aftermarket stereo setups??

I have a 01 tj and have the complete interior out of it, just finished the raptor lining. Which turned out awesome way better than I thought it would of, very happy with that stuff.. Well now I'm ready to put it all back together but I'm thinking if replacing the speakers in the inside and the radio... I have the infinity system in it now so there is speakers in the soundbar, and the 2 in the front if the dash and the subwoofer between the seats.. I was wondering I there is a thread in here that I can search up and see what guys are putting in place of the stick components? I am wanting to redo it al with new amps or whtever may be to have a kick ass system! Thanks

I recently installed a pioneer head unit, kicker 6.5 inch sub, and Polk dxi's in both the front and sound bar. Sounds putty good. I need to get an amp in there though

A popular amp for Jeeps is the Rockford Fosgate Punch. Tiny, powerful amp that's easily hidden.
Polk Audio makes the DXi Series of marine speakers which are really nice. You can replace the front speakers with a 5-1/4" with a bracket and 6-1/2" will fit in the sound bar.
Not familiar with what jeepers are using for a sub.

Also have an '01 TJ and am piecing together a new system over the last & next several weeks. Haven't seen many threads on entire systems, but happy to share what i installed as I did a good bit of research to find what I wanted.

So far:

Head Unit: Kenwood Excelon (wanted a rear USB input to keep iPod in glove box)
Front: Alpine S Series 4x6" (HUGE improvement over stock garbage speakers)
Sound Bar: Alpine R Series 6 3/4" (Use Alpine covers, but they will fit & sound awesome)

Next up is a new digital 5 ch Amp & to figure out what to do about replacing console sub.

Good luck & pls post what you decide to install. Might give me some ideas as well.

I used sony xplod head unit and speakers.
kicker 200w amp screwed to the passenger footboard sidewall.
5.25 3 way in the dash with home made brackets.
6.5 3 way in the sound bar. redrill the mounting holes.
6.5 inch shallow mount sub in the center console
sounds great, gets pretty loud. I can hear it well at 65 mph with the top down at half volume.

Haven't done this yet...but the plan is NO STEREO!

I started thinking, I have an iphone w/ everything I want on it...personal music & Pandora to stream everything else...

So, next project is rip out old head unit, install 4 ch. mp3 Pyle Marine amp in socket, connect phone to amp via minijack and make it all pretty w/ a piece of aluminum to cover the hole.

One toggle for power and one mini-jack to plug in my iPhone...That's it!

If you can find a bluetooth adapter to plug into that amp, you can just completely cover over the dash radio space. More stealth, less interesting to assclowns looking for a reason to break into your rig.

I've had this system in place for about a month, love it. 5-1/4"s in dash and soundbar. My factory system didn't include a sub.

I'm thinking about doing this too.. I'm confused as to how to connect all the wires to the amp.. Don't know much about stereos, but last time I checked, when you take out a head unit, there's a TON of wires back there lol
Plugging that into an amp would be beyond me..

I've been extremely happy with my small Sony 4 channel amp and Infinity Kappas I've had for a couple years now. The Sony amp is very small and I have it under the steering column. It also has a built in fan which makes it perfect for mounting upside down.

2 wires are power, 1 ground, everything else is speaker. All you need to hook an iPod/iPhone directly to an amp is a 3.5mm to RCA cable.

I hear ya...there's a lot of extra stuff back there...but really, it's not much different than wiring speakers for your home stereo...

You just need power to the amp, then positive & negative to all the speakers...

Here's the amp I'm looking at. It's less than $50 on Amazon and it's specifically made for ipod/mp3 connection (and comes w/ a wiring diagram)

That's a cool idea...I was actually considering installing a wireless wifi speaker setup, like the Jawbone Jambox or Bose, so no minijack, no amp, nothing...

Just way more expensive and I don't think you can connect to more than one speaker at a time on wifi or bluetooth...

Mindlesschunk 06-18-2013 06:02 PM

I think I decided just to buy this cheap jvc head unit and just use Bluetooth. No wires.

Have it. Love it. Very tweak-able. Set it to high power mode and crank it.

Well installed my stereo all alpine- changed the fronts out to 5 1/4's and changed out the soundbars 5 1/4's to 6 1/2's disconnects red the center console subwoofer(pulled fuse) and turned the radio on..... Definitely a lot crisper and cleaner sounds,, but seems to lack bass. I do have a alpine power pack I am waiting for to come in, should be here Friday. I sure hope it adds a little of the bass, if not I see me returning my speakers sand checking out a different brand speaker!! Anyone have input on some good bass speakers too replace the ones I just installed. Thanks

Neil F. 07-02-2013 03:21 PM

You are not going to get much bass from the dash/sound bars. The speakers are just too small.

Not sure what this says "disconnects red the center console subwoofer(pulled fuse) " Do you have the center sub (which is not very good to start with)?

michiganhunter 07-02-2013 05:41 PM

Aftermarket

I disconnected the center console sub woofer, it was blown and distorted! I would like to have some kind if bass in the jeep the alpine a are nice and clear and crisp and does have a small amount of bass guy not enough. So I was wondering what I could do? Run a small amp and a subwoofer in its own box? I do not want it in my center console.

Neil F. 07-02-2013 07:17 PM

There are a number of self powered subs that will fit under a seat. I have a Kenwood SW10 in the Jeep and a Sound Ordinance (forget the model designation, go to Crutchfield) in my Mustang. Both are using the same model head unit. I like the Sound Ordinance much better.
