front differential fluid change

Could somebody please tell me how much it should cost to change the fr diff fluid in a 2008 Wrangler.

A 2008 would be a JK, but it should be around $50 to have someone do it for you. Half that or less if you do it yourself.

Complexity is on par with a normal oil change.

OMG...

Doing it yourself should cost you about $15-$20. Not sure about your JK but the TJ takes about 2 quarts of oil. Take the cover off, drain, scrape and clean the old gasket off the cover, apply new gasket, bolt cover back on, fill until it comes out the hole and your done.

I had it in for the FREE 5 year powertrain check up. Said the fluid change was maintance and would cost $479. Obviously I said only do the free warranty jobs.

Believe me, when it comes to taking advantage of customers, dealers believe in equal opportunity. Whenever possible, don't go there.

It'll probably be a little more than the $50 I mentioned at most places if they're taking off the cover and resealing it (instead of just draining and refilling), but $480 should get you a whole new diff :)

If it's not leaking you don't even have to take the cover off. Just drain the fluid from the bottom plug and add new oil to the fill plug above. Make sure you can loosen the fill first though to make sure and just add the oil til it begins to overflow. Did it myself a bit ago and was very easy to do. 2L in the rear and about 1 in the front.

There has got to be some miscommunication going on there.
