I need help with wheels to run 35s
 
I have tried searching and going to manufacture sites, but not really getting my questions answered. Here is the deal. I got into offroading 2 years ago with my FJ Cruiser. Well, I just sold that and picked up a 2013jkur. I have a big wheelin trip planned for late June. So I have one month to get the new jeep ready.

First off wheels!

Is 4.5 back spacing sufficient to run a 35x12.5 tire?

Right now I am looking towards MB's 72 wheel (Matt black), but I only see them with a -6 offset, which I believe comes out to a 4.5 back spacing. Other suggestions would be welcomed, but I am most likely going through direct tire.

I have looked at 17" wheels, but would like to go 16". However would a 16" be able to clear breaks, etc.? Should I want to go to 37s later, would there be any issues with the 16"?

Please excuse the newb questions. I learned everything for the FJ and now I am starting over. :facepalm:

I've only been researching jk info since friday but from what I've found so far it looks like if you're going to run say 2.5" of lift 4.5" backspacing would be correct for running 35's. As for 16" vs 17" wheels, if all you were ever going to want to run was 35's I'd say 16's would be fine, but the selection of 37's seems to be much better for 17" wheels.

I agree that you should stay with 17s. Larger selection of tires and sizes.

Thank you for the info guys. My only issue is my planned tire (GY MTRs) are 30-40 more in the 17 verses the 16 size. I guess I have some thinking to do.

Anyone have any negatives against the MB 72 wheel?

The only negative is that they are discontinued. They have been replaced by Level 8 trackers. Since ur doing 35's, go with the 16s. Since ur not gonna upgrade anytime soon, no need for a 17 unless the wheels u want come in that size alone.

That's odd, DT is still showing them. No biggie, the level 8 tracker was my 2nd choice.

I have MB72 wheels in black on my TJ. They have -19 offset which I believe is 4.0 backspace. They are 15" with 35x12.5x15 tires.

Discount Tire did discontinue those some time ago. I did not understand why because they were very popular. I also see that they are now back on their website. Maybe they decided to sell them again. I really like mine. They have stayed balanced and true for over two years since installed, unlike the steel wheels they replaced.

Thank man, I am pretty sold on the MB72s if they are available. I will probably end up with the 16". I figure if I want to go to 37s the difference in the tires on two sets will almost cover the cost of a second set of wheels.

With the JK, I'd probably do 17 to offer more clearance between the rotor and wheel interior. For my TJ (on the other hand) I'm getting 15's to hide the fact my rotors are tiny.

Mickey Thompson Classic III's are offered in 17x9 with 4.5" BS. Similar style to MB's, just fyi to throw out another option.

Thanks, this was info I was hoping to get. So 16s are too tight a fit with the JK to work? I like the MTs, but really trying to stay with DiscountTire. They have been great with me and my group, so I try to put money back their way.

No no, 16's will work fine. 17's will offer more clearance (a given) that I personally would take since you're running 35's-37's and will still have plenty of sidewall. Tire selection in 16 is also an issue. As I said I'm going with 15's, but my rotors are smaller, and even the biggest brake kit will still fit. Ideally I'd be on 16" at that point but tire selection is poor per above and 17" is too much for running 33's, which I may do rather than 35's.

I talked with discount tire regarding those wheels, they can special order them for you -- $120 each (for 15x8) is what they quoted me. I'd expect 17x9 to run maybe $20-30 more. The reason I wanted the MT over some of the others was the 1) BS in the size I wanted (not an issue for you) and 2) the metal caps.

I say you should get the 16s. I just bought Duras, 315/75/16 with MB Stryker wheels. The 37s are overkill in my opinion, so the 16s will be fine. Why the 16s? Beefier look vs the 17s, a bit more sidewall and cheaper tires in general.

I like you just bought a JK and traded in my FJ. I have 4x4ed for 30yrs. After doing the math on the wheel backspace and speaking with several jp owners. 16 inch wheels, 33 inch tires 11.5 or 305x70rx16. Most that have bought 35 tires say they wish they had got 33s. Also rough country makes a 2.5 inch spring replacement lift that comes with shocks. hope that helps. The kit is on sale for 329.00

Its seems a lot of steering components do not work with 16" wheels. Does anyone know of a tie rod upgrade that would work with a 16" wheel?

Why would there be any issue with running 16" wheels? A bone stock JK sport comes with 16" steel wheels...
