New to the wrangler world...
 
Hey everyone, I am a PROUD new owner of a 97 wrangler tj. I have a few questions...( I do not know much about jeeps yet but am eager to learn body work and the mechanical side of it as well.)

1st off how can I tell the exact model of my wrangler (sport, Sahara, etc.)?

2nd what are some things I should focus on to start off my project? It has some surface rust and a couple spots that are rusted clear through the metal.

3rd I know frame rust is a huge issue with these and being that I am from MN I am sure this is a issue for my wrangler. How do I inspect the frame to be sure it's in good shape? Do I need to tear the whole thing down to the frame to restore this properly?

More questions to come I am sure, but this is a start for me and just wanted to say hi to all the fellow wrangler owners! All tips, comments, advice, and constructive critisim is greatly appreciated! Thanks all!!!

1) Post a picture, unless the PO removed the decals from the side your Jeep it should either say Sport or Sahara. What motor do you have? the SE came with the 2.5 i4 in 97.

2) I would take control of the rust and make sure all the lubricants are ready to go, like motor oil, gear oil, and diff oil.

3) The best way to inspect is to find a camera for pipes that has a flexible end. The next best thing is to just shoot some air through it, and see what comes out for rust and dirt. There is also frame coating products from Eastwood that people have had success with, the only thing to make sure of before you use these is to make sure your coating a clean surface.

Can't help with the rust issues - where I live rust isn't much of an issue.
But, here's a LINK to a VIN decoder, that will tell you which sub-model you have, as well as all the technical info that your TJ had when it rolled off the assembly line.

You should have inspected the entire undercarriage for rust prior to buying the rig. I've seen dozen of horror stories from guys with rotten frames who inadvertently bought rust buckets with performing due diligence. You should inspect the undercarriage prior to making any upgrades. Your rig may be a mess not destined for a tub and frame swap.

This is a picture of the jeep. It's got some surface rust that I plan to fix and one hole rusted through the drivers side front fender. I did look at the frame prior to buying and it doesn't look all too bad but does have some rust on it.. How can I further inspect the frame? I plan to take it apart this winter to fix a lot of the rust. I want to do some kind of an undercoating to prevent rusting once I fix it. Is this a good idea or a lot more work then it's worth to do? X2, its an SE model. You have the AX-5 5spd manual and Dana 35 rear axle, unless the PO changed anything from stock.
