First wrangler and first manual - help
 
Hi all,

So just this past Saturday I bought my first car and it is an 01 Sahara with a Jasper manual transmission (99 K miles). The Jasper trans was put in at 83K and also new rotors and a new O2 sensor and new clutch. Now, when I go from stop to 1st gear, it is very jerky unless I accelerate very slowly and let my foot off the clutch very slowly. Same with second gear, but 3rd, 4th, and 5th are SUPER smooth. I'm not sure if this is how a manual usually runs, how a manual wrangler usually runs, or how a jasper runs OR if I am a poor manual driver (considering this is my first manual). Also, when shifting from first to second and second to third, I feel like I hit something when physically moving the stick from gear to gear.
I did have a Jeep-only mechanic take a look at it before I bought it and he said it was a near mechanically-flawless jeep. He said there was a very small valve leak (?) that would have to be fixed in the next 50K miles and would cost me ~150 bucks. What do you guys think? Should I get the trans fluid changed?

Hopefully someone else will have a better answer, but as far as feeling something hitting when shifting, have you lifted your shifter boot and visually checked to make sure nothing is hanging up?

What gears are you running? I'm running 4.88s on 33" tires, and I'm also really jerky in first gear from hitting 3k RPMs at 7 mph. I pretty much reserve 1st for on the rocks and in 4 low, and start my Jeep from a stop in the city from 2nd. Pulling away from a red light, I'm in 3rd already before I make it all the way through the intersection.

Also, not to be that guy, but you bought your first Jeep... Not your first car. :thumb:

If the mechanic drove it, it's probably just you. Go park on a hill and see if you can get it going easily w/o stalling or bucking the thing around. If you can't, just keep driving and you'll get it down.

So far as the jerkiness goes, it sounds like you need to get used to the right amount of thin pedal as you're starting from a stop. No worries. I had the same problem when I first got my stock TJ back in 2000. Seemed like the Jeep wanted to jump with any minor press of the gas pedal in first gear until I got the finesse down. It just didn't respond like any car that I had driven previously so I had to adjust. I'd imagine that if you're not running stock gearing, that ability to jump or jerk might get magnified, even beyond first gear. That being said, if you have reason to suspect that there are any mechanical issues that warrant a closer look, definitely run that by your trusted mechanic if you aren't inclined to diagnose the issue by yourself. Finally, belated congrats on the Jeep!

Congrats on your first "Jeep" :thumb:. I too had to get used to my clutch in my Jeep when I first got it. Really have to just feather the gas when pulling off in first. I've been driving manuals way before I got my license..err..26 years ago, and every manual drives different. Just like n00g7 said, practice on a hill...try not to roll back, you'll get the hang of it.

Wrangler manual transmissions drive different from any other vehicle and it takes a lot of patience to learn hot to drive them smoothly. I have been driving manuals since 1965 and it still takes a few minutes to get used to a different vehicle.

One thing to remember you are not driving a sports car so you need to shift slowly like your driving a truck not a race car.

What you are experiencing is normal for a rookie driver. You need to learn how to drive a manual transmission. It will take a few weeks to get used to the transmission and clutch.

Just food for thought... if your transmission hasn't been serviced before (fluid flushed) do not flush the fluid. With 90k miles on it you might do more damage flushing the fluid.

Please explain how you can damage by changing the tranny fluid.:confused:

If you haven't changed tranny fluid in 90k or so any metal shavings or parts are held together by the fluid inside the pan. Flushing the fluid could in fact cause something that was being held in place to come loose or break. If you have been keeping up with the service then you will be fine. See if there are any repair orders or a maintenance log with the vehicle.

Pan? He is talking about a MANUAL transmission. There is no pan. Just a drain/fill plug. If the OP'er doesn't know how long it's been since the MANUAL transmission oil had been changed its a whole lot better for him to drain it and replace it then to do nothing.

OP said the transmission was put in 16k miles ago so he shouldn't need to worry about that.

Given that the transmission was recently replaced, there's a good chance that whoever did it also machined the flywheel. It's common practice with most clutch jobs, but the FSM specifically calls out NOT to do it with the wrangler or you will lose the slight dome shape that facilitates smooth clutch engagement when starting off from a dead stop...
