Lift kit for a 2012 JKU Sport and re-gearing advice

I am getting overwhelmed by looking at all these lift kits, I dont know what I need or want.

Here is what I can tell you, it is my daily driver and do a good mix of highway and city commuting I do like to go hit the trails at least once or twice a month, and im looking to join a off road club near me soon (just need to be able to compete first!)

I know I want a 2.5" or 3" lift and want to run either 33's or 35's.

What is the best Lift kit/shock combo around without spending ludicrous amounts of money?

Once lifted, I want to handle the wheel/tire situation. It is a 6spd manual and I have no idea what to do about re-gearing it.

Please help I am very new to all of this.

Welcome to the site!

Lifts are more of a personal preference. The main guideline you will want to consider when choosing your lift and gears is the tire size + whether you're wheeling or not.

My rule of thumb:

32" - 34" = 0" - 2.5" lift
35" = 2.5 - 4"
37" = 3.5 - 4"
40" = 4" - 6"

Gears should also be determined by tire size:

33" or less = Fine with stock 3.21 or 3.73
35" = 3.73" - 4.88"
37" = 4.88 - 5.13

The lift will be determined by how much you want to wheel it, or not. AEV is great for on road but not for wheeling. Rock Krawler, Teraflex, Metalcloak (and many others) for heavier wheeling...

Which is the most trusted lift and shocks?

What is the difference from 3.73 -4.88? I don't really understand the gear ratio math involved?

Choosing ur tires should be ur first priority. It will make or break ur mpg goal since its ur dd. decisions decisions.

There are MANY trusted lift manufacturers. All the brands I mentioned are top brands and there are many others that would be similar quality. Again, it depends more on what you will be doing. Are you going to wheel it? If so, how much, how hard, etc. Or is the lift mostly to clear the tires, won't be wheeled much.

It is definitely going to be wheeled, I have taken it out once and now I am totally hooked! so I will get some good use out if it. It just has to be my daily driver as well and I know that limits me a bit.

I'm getting 19-20 with 33's. I learned my lesson with my 07 tundra. 35's, mt tires, dd, single digit mpg...and I spent 1000 on gas a month. Truly not worth it so I sold it to a family member. Different beast, but u get my point. 35s do look great though.

What kind of lift do you have?

If you're planning to wheel it, I'd suggest checking out the different mid arm systems from Rock Krawler. I have the Rock Krawler 2.5" Max Travel. I originally had 33's and it was perfect for them. You can fit 35's with it, but would suggest 3" - 3.5" for 35's. I ended up replacing my 2.5" RK springs with Evo 4" springs recently.

As with most lifts, everything is upgradeable. So if you start with a entry level 2.5" lift, you can add parts later if you want.

Regarding gears, most will not want to regear unless you move to 35's. I have 3.73 gears with 35's. I used the AEV Procal to fix my spedo and adjust for tire size. I will eventually upgrade gears when I move to 37's.

Im between AEV and TeraFlex for lifts I was thinking of 2.5" how much would it take to upgrade to a 3"or 4" later? Just springs?

I'm going with 2" Rancho Sport Lift with 9000 series shocks. More of a leveling kit, but didn't want to deal with changing too much suspension at this point. Never plan to do more than 2.5" lift. Will be running 33" DuraTracs with my 3.73 gears.

Depends on how you do it. I went from 2.5" to 4" and only had to replace my springs (front and rear) and rear shocks. Front shocks were already long enough.

You could get longer shocks for the taller lift if you plan to upgrade. 2.5" - 3" won't make much of a difference. 2.5" - 4" would be a significant jump.

I'd go with the Teraflex over the AEV. AEV is built more for good on road manners, Teraflex is better for wheeling.
