Vinyl Wrap?

My sister put a vinyl wrap on her dodge charger to protect her paint from rocks and chips.

Any of you do this to your wrangler? I know its a wheeling vehicle and scratches are a sort of badge of honor but my JKU is still new to me and I am a bit OCD about things like paint quality and such.

Jt_Ripper 05-22-2013 01:23 AM

i thought about doing that too.. buy vinyl would prob tear with a good off road session... i did some research found this..

TrailSkinz | Skin it - Trail it - Protect it

they look a bit more suited for off road..

PrecisionPowder 05-22-2013 03:13 AM

you could plastidip the whole thing. use the kit from dip your car not rattle cans. it will lay down better.

vinyl wraps get expensive, plastidip really isnt that much maybe $300 to do the whole thing including the sprayer. best thing about that is if you want to change the color just pull it off

You can certainly do this if you want. The suggestions above have covered many options.

There is another member here who used a clear film to protect his entire Jeep. He loves the product and has verified it's healing properties.

http://www.wranglerforum.com/f33/xpe...up-135110.html

If you like your color and just want to protect it, the clear film in the thread referenced may be for you.

If you like the idea of a color change, or a matte finish, some of the other options may be more appropriate.

I don't recall the price, but any of these products will run you a pretty penny for sure. But if you value the finish of your paint above all else, this may be for you.

If you do anything, be sure to post pics. We love pics. :)

I saw an ad on the TV show Extreme 4x4 Saturday for 3M film that was released for DIY. Might want to look at that. I've thought about doing the front facing things.

I originally wanted an Orange Crush JKU, but since production ended on them late last year, and the ones I CAN find are either out of my price range or loaded with stuff I don't want. I ended up ordering a white JKU 6speed (which I'm currently "patiently" awaiting) and plan to do the vinyl wrap. Both for color and for the added protection (even if it's a little bit). Plus when I get bored I can just remove it, keep it white or do another color.

After researching this for a while (did I mention I'm "patiently" waiting?) I came across this site http://www.metrorestyling.com/3M-Sco...80-s/16764.htm which sells the vinyl in 5 foot rolls by max of 70 feet. I ordered two 1'x5' rolls (orange and matte green) for about $18 shipped each to compare and test. I actually even wrapped my laptop in the orange.

It's tedious to do it yourself but from estimates I should be able to do the whole jeep for about $450 in materials + time and patience. Or you can pay to get it done for anywhere from $1500-$2000.

I was also looking into Plasti Dip and bought some in black and blaze orange for tests. I think I'm just going to be using it for accents though.

HEY thats my thread! and yes I do love the xpel wrap. wanted to be reckless with the truck but am a lunatic about the black paint. The xpel wrap is worth the cost. mine is 16 months old and its still the best mod on my truck. (even thou no one knows its there but me)

you can see a full review on facebook.com/jeeplab

where we talk about really putting it to the test in moab.

300 is a bit much if you have to do it over and over...

so is the 1500.00

the trailskinz are 250... and come off and go back on...or even better custom ones... starting at 189.

Saranrap 05-22-2013 10:17 PM

Opticoat!!

WranglerKCCO 05-23-2013 01:05 AM

SO MANY CHOICES!!!!

What is opticoat?

How much did the xpel coat cost?

I want full coverage on the hood-I got mud all over the hood last time I went wheeling and now I have some sopts that I cant buff out from it... I dont want that to get worse thats for sure

scottmphoto 05-23-2013 11:20 PM

there are no "edges" each panel is one piece and wrapped or tucked to where you dont see edges.

blackandlime 11-20-2013 10:28 AM

Carbon fiber wraps work great and very durable. I had it on for over a year on my hood to give it a two tone color look and it did great. When I wanted a change all I had to do was heat it a little with a hair dryer and it peeled right off with on marks or wear on the paint. Great stuff.

blackandlime 11-20-2013 10:28 AM

My carbon wrap was made by 3m.
