Clear oily fluid

This morning when my daughter took off in our 2000 TJ I noticed a pretty good size puddle of a clear oily fluid under the center of the front end. Any guesses as to what this could be and where I should start looking when she gets home?

Sounds like it could be the Pinion seal where the front drive shaft attaches to the pinion shaft. Pretty simple fix.

How oily? How clear? How thick is the fluid? Location wise, it could be the water pump. It's impossible to diagnose without more info.;) You'll have to slide under the Jeep with a flashlight...

Fluid was mineral oil clear and about the same viscosity. Didn't appear to have any water in it. First thing I'm gonna do is slide under it when it gets back this afternoon. Appears to be driving fine at this point.

If she has a Manual trans it could also be clutch hydralic fluid. Check all her fluid levels while your at it!

Got her up on the ramps, checked all the fluids, scanned her with a flashlight and couldn't find anything wrong, out of place or damp. I'm certainly not a mechanic, but can't find a thing out of place. Very curious! Gonna watch her for a while and see if anything shows signs of dripping?

The Jeep was just excited to be driven...... :)

I had an amber fluid leaking from a wheel once, so I smelled it to see what it was. Dog piss

The muffler has a weep hole, could it just be a condensation puddle?

larjeep 05-25-2013 04:33 PM

There's no clear fluid on a jeep except brake and clutch.

XDR 05-25-2013 05:03 PM

We're you using A/C before it showed up? If so probably condensation.

MLaborde 05-25-2013 09:30 PM

Taste it. Yeah, taste it. I know, I know... but I didn't say drink it, just a little on your tongue. It wont kill you and it will let you get a true feeling for the viscosity and smell.

Without being there... Maybe the oil out of the steering stabilizer?

jeepsrgreat 05-25-2013 10:04 PM

Power steering is clear....but but rare that that would leak on a TJ...lol

After I undercoated my Jeep, the ac drain would make puddles like you describe. It was in front of the passenger side floors/firewall area. I put a tube on the drain like it should have and its not done it since that I've noticed.

I know I'm late to the party, and a new poster at that. Use this forum a lot but never checked in officially. Noticed a clear puddle of liquid under the front passenger side of my TJ today. Waited literally 8 hours for it to evaporate, never did, which makes me think it wasn't condensation from the A/C. I gave up and wiped it up. No smell. Didn't taste it. Any ideas on what this could be? Should I be worried?
