Track bar, drag link, and tie rod are loose????
 
My bro's jeeps steering is loose and has alot of play in it so I crawled under it to check it out . I discovered that the track bar, drag link, and tie rod are all loose! His jeep has a 5.5 inch lift I believe with an sye/cv, rear upper control arms, adjustable track bar, ect.. Also he has a drop pitman arm..! I've heard these arnt needed and wanted to know of this could be the cause:)

All that is needed. Why not tighten everything up to spec and go from there?

The drop pitman arm is needed? And I tightened everything down as much as possible haha could it be that all the bushings are bad ?

At 5.5" you're right at the point where you may need it, check to see if the mounting points are parallel with the track bar.

Looks like the PA is about an inch lower than the track bar mount. Would this cause these things to be loose?

They could still be parallel. No, I don't think it would be the cause but that's how they should be lined up.

If components are still loose, my money is there.

Unless he has a dropped track bar mount, the dropped pitman arm is a bad idea and will cause bump steer.

So with just his adjustable track bar we should get him a stock pitman arm?

You should check to see if the mounting points are parallel...if they are or really close, leave as is.

Eyeballing it won't give you a good answer. Lay something across the first set of mounting points and use something like http://www.amazon.com/Johnson-Level-...ds=slope+meter and then measure the second set.

Thanks man! And say they are parallel does anybody have any other thoughts on what could be causing them to be loose?

Rotational play is normal and required. All of those components are mounted on ball joints so they can move as the suspension moves up & down. They shouldn't have any side-to-side slop/play but they must be able to rotate around their long longitudinal axis.

And where a '97 or newer Wrangler is concerned, it is very rare for a dropped Pitman arm to ever be the right thing to install. It was older Jeeps where dropped Pitman arms were required for nearly every suspension lift.

How much drop does a stock pitman arm have?

Installed a stock pitman arm on his jeep today! We can definitely tell the difference but it still has a lot of play :banghead: I sat under the front while he turned the wheel and the pitman arm doesn't move with the steering wheel until it runs out of "play". Is this the steering box?

i think about 2" and a drop arm is around 4". As jerry said it's not pften needed.

Try jacking one tire of the ground and grab the wheel and wiggling it right and left..it should be solid and not have any play..if it moves then have someone watch where its moving..you can also use this to check hub bearings by wiggling the tire up and down
