Rear axle yukon dana 44 install. Help!

Hello I Just had a bearing pressed on the axle and it was done with a 20 ton press bearing is down as far as it will go. I installed the axle and wanted to know how much end play in acceptable. It seems like there is almost 1/4". Backing plate bolts right up and all is in but. Not sure about play. And how far down the bearing goes. Shop that did press work said it will not go any further down. It's a set 10 bearing.

Drum or disk brakes in the rear? If they are disk brakes, did you face the axle retainer bracket properly so its lip is facing in towards the seal and bearing? That extra lip is what holds the seal & bearing far enough into the axle tube so there is no in-out play like there is with a Dana 35c.

I think they sent me the wrong retainer plate it does not have a lip on it.

I have a 2006 dana 44 rubicon with disc

There's the problem right there. The new problem is you'll have to buy new bearings & bearing retainers to install the correct retainer plate since they will be ruined by the removal process.

This shows the correct retainer bracket with the extra lip required for when you have disc brakes. :)

wow. the place sent me this and I have been driving my self nuts.. I took it to 2 places to press the bearing down and just realized that the plate has no lip. is it ok to drive the jeep still right now with the flat plate on it

Jerry Bransford 05-31-2013 06:36 PM

I wouldn't drive it like that.

Larry, I agree with Jerry. I press these bearings myself at work, and I don't see this issue. Of course, I'm generally doing stock stuff.

Yep they sent me the flat one and they did not notice it. I have all the new stuff now. Just have to find new place to press it. I told them they never pushed the bearing down far enough. Problem is they didn't look either when they set it up. Now I have to cut all off and have done again.

It's all set. Nice and tight. What a difference i used a 12 ton hand pump press. Went on no problems. All new bearings etc.
