Replace Shocks

I want to replace the shocks on my 04 TJ. It has a 4 inch zone lift but the shocks are pretty beat up. Can I replace the shocks without jacking the jeep? Will the springs hold everything in place so I can go in and switch them out? Curious on your thoughts.

Just take them off and put the new ones on. There's no need to jack it up, remove the tires, etc.

Yes you can. But they are much easier to get to if you take a tire off while replacing each shock. If you live in a area where they salt the roads, you will want to spray penetrating oil on all the bolts for a few days before the swap.

Unless the bolts are really rusted, it takes longer to jack it up and pull the wheels off than it does to replace the shocks.

No need to remove anything but the shock.

Nah. You'll just have to take wheels/tires. The coil springs will hold the weight. Make sure those new shocks come with a boot too. Reason being, mud, dirt, sand, etc. will ruin the seals in your shocks. Hope this helps

You don't absolutely have to take the wheels/tire of but it'll make your job a heck of alot easier.

You dont need a boot for shocks. Whatever gets on the polished shaft will come off when the shock cycles. Thats part of the reason the shaft is polished, so nothing sticks to it, the other part is so it passes into the body through the seals

You're right. But for me, it's just one of those weird things that I like to do. Better to be safe than sorry. I'm not saying you're wrong at all. It's whatever that person wants to do.

Thanks all for the input, this is very encouraging. Can't wait to get started.
