4 wheel drive TJ problem
 
Hey guys just picked up an 01 wrangler and when checking the 4 wheel drive on some loose dirt only the rear two tires are spinning in boult 4h and 4L. Also was stuck in the mud and a friend observed just the rear two spinning as well. What should I look at first? Please need some help thx

If you were stuck in the mud only one of the tires should have been spinning due to having an open differential, but that's another lesson. Crawl under the jeep and check your transfercase linkage. You'll see a bracket connected to the tub, that's the fulcrum for the lever inside that you shift with. Follow that back and it should be linked into the transfercase itself. If it isn't engaging there's a disconnection somewhere. Try engaging 4hi while your down there using the stick(can't think of a better term) that goes into the transfercase. If this still doesn't do it you have bigger issues.

I also would like to add that when switched into 4h and 4L I can feel the extra power to the wheels, so I think shifting into high and low is working but front wheels won't spin. Can this still be a linkage issue or something in the front end? Is it possible the linkage is not fully engaging the 4 wheel drive?

Ok I checked the linkage and it seem to be working fine. I jacked the jeep up when in 4 wheel drive and the front wheel were not spinning but the front drive shaft was spinning in 4 wheel and not in 2 wheel like it should. So I think the transfer case is working. So is the problem in my front differential? Or some were in the axel? Next step is to open up the differential and see how that is working.

OMG never seen a transfer case look so bad. It was full of rust and little to no gear oil. Gear oil looks like it never been changed, and the ring and pinion are in really bad shape the pinion is striped down too nothing. So have a new project on my hands. Just hope the transfer case is in good shape.

That'd be your differential (diff). If your tcase is sending torque to the front drive shaft it should be fine. Wouldn't hurt to swap all fluids, especially finding your front rear like this.

What do you guys think it seemed to big of a job for myself to handle even after watching a bunch of videos. So the 4x4 shop charged 900 bucks for new pinion and ring and spider gears plus instal?

changing a differential requires acute precision and calibration, and unless you know you're way around a machine shop with good working knowledge of torque specs and measurement in the thousandth of an inch scale , plus have access to some of the specialty tools like a diff spreader, dial indicator and a torque wrench, your chances of success will be near pure luck at best unless you have someone with some experience walking you through it... videos are a good start, but sometimes they miss things... and they dont always answer the question if something goes wrong... i'm not trying to pick on you, but if you don't know the difference between a diff and a T-case, get professional help with this...

Refer to above. Buddy of minr did it himself but he also had access to another friend's full garage an it takes a shit tone of trial and error so it doesnt blow up on ya. Tht being said he also went through a coyple of dana 35s (axles) eith only 32s saying it was the V8's fault.

900 doesnt sound too terrible but depends where ya are.
