Front shock replacement

Anyone got any old shop tricks for getting the front shock off? The shocks I have on there now are not factory, and they don't have a nut on the shaft to keep it from spinning in place when I try to remove the top nut. I'm not manly enough to hold it in place with my bare hands, either.

The one shock you are replace.. you can use a shop towel and good set of vice grips.

Sometimes the top of the shaft will have flats to grab with a wrench or be indented for an allen wrench.

What Morris and Silver said. If you don't care about the shock you can forgo the towel and clamp right onto the shock.
