Overheated, now I got this noise
 
So I uploaded this video to You Tube of me reving up my motor a bit so you guys can hear this noise, and hopefully tell me exactly what I broke/damaged. As you can tell it does not make any weird noises at idle, it is when I rev it up that it screams. :eek:

I have an electric fan. What happened was my Relay that fed power to my fan temp sensor failed that was controlled by the switch in my cab for deep water crossing. I didnt know I was over heating for probably 5 minutes. I was driving down some trails and I heard my engine making a noise. After a couple minutes I noticed I was maxed out on the temp gauge. So I killed my engine immediately and let it cool down. When I started it back up it had this noise, but then after about 10 minutes it went away and I drove it for hours without it coming back that day. I checked my oil and coolant, they aren't mixed and are both fine. My oil pressure is still nice and strong right around 60. Idrove about 120 miles home after a few more hours of wheeling. No loss of power or anything. Drives just like normal. That was about two weeks ago. Today when I started it up for the first time since I notice this noise is back. This time it isnt going away, but I am also not reving it up like I did when it completely went away the first time.

I am crossing my finger you guys can tell me what I did, and how many miles I should expect to have in it before it bites the dust. Depending on what it is I will either repair it, or park it until I get a V8. It is a shame since this motor is only at 103k miles.

Jason, are you revving it when it is making that MMMMMMRRRRRRRRRR sound?

Could be the alternator bearings.

Check your power steering fluid.

Listen to your idler and accessory pullies.

If you get a long extension and put it on the bolt in the center of the pulley (if the bolt doesn't spin) or on the body of one of your accessories, have a friend rev it to where the noise starts while you move around placing the extension and holding your ear to it listening to where it is the loudest.

Or you could go get a mechanics stethescope.

Yeah I got some fuel line I have used. I need to get the stethoscope. I am revving it up to about 3000 rpms to get it to make the noise. Sounds like it is coming off the block, but I hope you are right and I am wrong.

Don't forget that sounds like that transfer quite easily because the accessories are solid mounted to the block.

I have troubleshot and replaced everything except the power steering in the past year. Time doesnt mean much though when you abuse it like I do in mud. when stuff died before it sounded different too. I related it to the overheating since they both happened at the same time.

I don't think its the engine... its as said above a pulley or other part.... sort of reminds me of the power steering sounds you get at full wheel lock...

So it is just a coincidence that my temps went past 260 to the pin, within 5 minutes of me noticing my Jeep making a new noise. Also, like I said everything is new except the power steering pump.

So maybe it is a coincidence. What damage could have been done from my temps being that high for a few minutes?

And Just because it is "new" doesn't mean it is good. Honestly, it sounds like your alternator bearings to me.

What damage could have been done: warped head, cracked head, cracked block, possibly burned a valve some how, engine ran lean due to computer sensing hot temps, etc etc.
I would recommend doing a thermostat change, and a coolant flush anyway.

It doesn't sound like something internal to me on the video though. Get a stethoscope and listen to what it is telling you.

Try this: Take off your accessory belt, and then start it up (cold start up), and rev it, see if it makes the noise ( you can run it for a couple of minutes without water flowing through it, but just do it long enough so that you can test for the noise).
That will tell you if it is internal or not.

I will just use a hose to listen to the accessories. Oil and coolant aren't mixing so I know block is not cracked, at least if it is it is not bad at all. I have great pressure. I go through alternators pretty regularly since I like mud, but this def sounds different. They are normally higher pitch when I kill them.

If I cant figure out where it is coming from I will pull the belt.

Hear will kill a set of piston rings in no time. Rings keep seal to stop Blowby pressure by keeping outward pressure against the cylinder wall. When an engine reaches 240 degrees or higher cast rings will loose their elasticity and outward pressure.

Your sounds may be a bearing as heat breaks down lubricant within the bearing. I would do as previously stated, remove the belt and start engine and see if the noise is still present, if not you have an internal engine issue or Trans issue. A got engine means overheated Trans if automatic without an external Trans cooler.

After listening to your video, I can hear the belt squealing, that tells me you have either a bad tensioner, idler, alternator, water pump, power steering pump, or AC clutch. May need a new belt also.

Sounds like an idler or pump to me. Its not a rod or main bearing....too steady..

That is the first thing I heard that makes me agree. I didn't think of that. it def is steady and loud. Hopefully alternator, but I am guessing power steering since it sounds different then usual for alternator. Alternator is under warranty though, and my local auto zone doesn't care that I break stuff offroad. They all love my jeep.

Seems the noise is gone. Exhaust from the cat back is shot until my new muffler gets here this week so it doesn't sound perfect, but at least I know my motor is fine.

I'd say you need an idler pulley and belt, or the alternator is going out.

If mud gets in the Alternator case, it won't last long.

Yeah thats how I kill em. They don't like mud. My power gauge is fine though, and so is my 1700 watt stereo. I am guessing power steering. Never know though. Time to troubleshoot.

I had an idler pulley go bad, sounded pretty weird, could not figure out where it was coming from till I used the old long screwdriver method..

I don't know that method. I always used a hose to my ear, but that's not working this time.
