Well it's almost done. I have a 2001 tj sport with 4" xflex lift, 8.8 rear, Dana 44 from 88 grand wag and 37" GY mtrs. Sye, 4.56 gears. I'm hoping to be rolling within the next month. I'm in Chattanooga n will make a couple test runs locally just to make sure she's good to go. After that I'd like to hit wind rock, wheeling in the country or Toms new park in South Pittsburgh. Anyone in the area or out of the area who's interested in getting a ride together let me know.

This is the jeep done but not a good pic. Still some gearing issues in the front but not gonna pay for gear setup until I can afford an ox. I'm already regretting not going longarms n making plans to. Also starting to think about v8s and rollcages. I wanna keep it street able but have a feeling it won't be for long.

Well I haven't been to good at documenting this build or pics for it. But at the present I'm regearing the dana44 front. This is the first regear I've done n already 2 6 hr days into it. Today I finished my setup bearings and determined total shims on carrier. I did do an initial setup off my first figures. Everything looks good, backlash is .007. Pinion preload is on target and mesh looks good to eye. In the morning I'm gonna paint teeth and check mesh officially. If mesh is good is it as simple as same shims new bearings and then final check? I'd like some advice from experience and who might hear me in the morning ( not to early) if I have any issues or questions. This is the last step in my build for now. Ill be trail ready then. In the end I've got tj with 4" xflex lift. A rugged ridge SYE on my Tcase spins my 8.8 rear and the waggy D44 front. After tomorrow both will b spinning to 4.56 count from Yukon teeth. the front is hung in place by a totally custom truss and has mile markers hubs sealing the ends. The rear was already setup under a tj when I got it from J&J 4 wheel drive in Birchwood Tn so it slid perfectly under mine. Right now running some ford/dodge wagon wheels wrapped in 37 GY wranglers. I've been driving it for the last few weeks after the lift and axle swap. After hooking up the factory swaybar it handles great. I run with traffic even on the highways compfortably. I plan on welding the front diff since I've got manual hubs, does anyone have any negs on that??

What did you do about the lug pattern difference? And the width difference? Thought about this same set up.

jeeperdad1977 02-20-2014 09:28 AM

A mix of early 70s gm spindles n ford hubs changes to a 5 on 5.5 lug pattern. The guy I bought all that from also had spacers to convert the 5 on 4.5 rearend 8.8 to 5 in 5.5 to match which also spaced it out 1.25 inches on each side making it all real close. If your matching the same axles I have there is a super 88 kit for the 8.8 which adds width and offers axles drilled for either 5 lug pattern. Do your homework n ya can find plenty of options. Also by knowing whats going on with the build its less likely that someone will rip you off on bad work.
