Spare tire carrier

I'm going to be running 31x10.50R15 on 15" x 8" 3.75" BS on a 2006 x will I need to upgrade the spare tire carrier or will the stock one be fine? Thanks

My stock YJ carrier held up to 31s, but you will probably want extensions on the rubber bumpers so the tire doesn't rattle like crazy.

It cracked my tail gate in 3 places.

That's crazy. I guess all Jeeps are different though.

First thing I was told was to immediate replace the stock tire-carrier with one for oversized rims/tires as this is a know issue - especially with +33" tires. The weight is too much for stock. Sorry to hear of the damage.

If it was a BMW, I'd probably care ( well- not actually) but since its my Jeep, I got out the welder and ran a couple beads over them. Damage covered by spare and carrier.

With that wheel and backspacing, the tire will no longer contact the rubber tire bumpers on the tailgate.

Exactly correct. The stock carrier will be fine, as long as the tire is supported and kept from bouncing as designed.

There are many ways to extend the rubber tire bumpers. I used hockey pucks which were the perfect thickness for my previous 33x12.5 tires with wheels the same backspacing you have. You will need something a little thicker for your 31's. A friend made some for his Rubicon out of pieces of wood cut to the shape of the bumpers and painted black. I have seen them made out of another set of bumpers cut to size.

Either way, you will need longer bolts. I took a torx bolt out of one of them and went to the local fastener store to get some longer allen head bolts of the same thread size.
