Do large tire cause damage
I have a 95 yj with 33x12.5 on it I was wondering if the tires would put extra strain on my 5speed with stock gear ratio

Your ax-15 should be fine.. as long has it has been kept on up fluid changes etc... The clutch might take some more wear and tear... you could do a gear swap.. but that get costly and best to change out rear axle as well.. so not cheap..

Your profile is blank so I don't know which motor you have but the answer either way is yes, any extra weight and turning a taller tire with or without stock gears adds a strain. Now the question is how much? I've been running taller tires for 21 years and 200,000 miles with no major work on the motor, tranny or gears, the biggest cost has been in loss of a couple MPG's. So the question is, is it worth it? To me it is absolutely!

oversized tires will also wear your ball joints out much faster, when its time upgrade to heavy duty ball joints

Okay, with the 2.5 it may cause you more MPG's to turn big meats, and of course it has to work harder than the 4.0. Still there are plaenty of guys on here with more miles than me on their 2.5 running tall tires, it is a very tough motor.

my bad thought you had a 6cly.. in that case you have the ax-5. which is weaker than the ax-15 but is still a good trans.. Most of the time in higher mile units 5th gear will go out over time, regardless of tire size...
