Spark Plug Replacement
 
My 2008 Wrangler X (3.8L V8) seems a bit sluggish - local mechanic says plugs should be replaced at 40k - I now have 45k - but Jeep maintenance guide says 102k.

Question - should I replace now and if so are there any recommendations of type, e.g. a better type of plug or just Pep Boy specials??

I'd go for either Autolite's iridium-tipped XP5426 which will perform well close to 200k miles or their 100k mile platinum-tipped APP5426. Champion and NGK makes good plugs for your engine too but I don't yet have their part numbers memorized.

Thanks JPi - do you recommend I change them at 45k - and will they give me more horsepower?

Also been thinking about converting to cold air intake...thoughts?

The factory plugs are a platinum tip plug, which will last far longer than 45k. While changing mine out at 40k smoothed out the idle and upped the mileage slightly, It won't give you more power. And my opinion on cold air intakes are right there with programmers that add HP to your jeep, waste of $$. Gearing is the best thing you can do after larger tires to up the power.

Stan nailed it. Only one I run in my vehicles.

High mileage on todays spark plugs themselves isn't an issue. I wouldn't leave any set of plugs in more than 50k. The problems you have is when the damn things seize up in the heads from too many heat cycles or clown hands install.

Don't forget some antiseize for the plugs and dielectric grease for the boots to finish the install, bud.
