Jku vs FJ Cruiser?

So I was talking to a buddy of mine (he's a toyota car salesman), he came out with "so you should get yourself an fj, they are a more formidable off road vehicle". I myself thought this was a bunch of bs, seeing how the wrangler is the most capable off road vehicle off the lot. Just wanted to see what you guys thought of the statement.

WatchThis! 06-11-2013 05:33 PM

I bet if he sold Exterars he would say they are the best. Some people are just like that.

apresas 06-11-2013 05:35 PM

My thoughts exactly...

Tell him to take the doors AND TOP off of an FJ (fake jeep?) and then you can begin the discussion.

BManz 06-11-2013 05:39 PM

Whuuuu...you mean....really? The Subaru Forester isn't the best off road vehicle after all?

Disconnected 06-11-2013 05:41 PM

Biased opinions or not, id like to see his "facts" on what makes it better lol

donmeca2020 06-11-2013 05:41 PM

i wouldn't exactly knock the FJ, i was honestly thinking of jumping on one a few years back but just didn't have the heart to get rid of my Evo then. i even frequented an FJ forum for a few weeks. they have quite abit of aftermarket support and i seen alot pics and vids of these guys taking them off roading and through hell.

Now comparing to a jeep, i can't say its real competition but its definetly a decent off road vehicle. My father even suggested i should look into those as well but im just dead set at getting me a wrangler unlimited. you can't take the roof or doors off on those things and that is a big factor of choice for me.

I think it's the sort of statement a salesman makes. "Formidable" is an entirely subjective and unquantifiable term, so you can't prove him wrong. It's an empty and pointless statement that's not worth arguing; if you want to, I would suggest to him that Jeep salespeople don't make the same claim for their vehicles, not because they can't but because they don't need to. Tough guys don't go round telling people how tough they are.

WatchThis! 06-11-2013 05:46 PM

Yeah we run into the FJ guys every now and again on the trails. They do great on the easier trails. But when they venture on anything over a easy 3 its time to go around or take another trail. They tend to clog the trails up when it gets tough.

Sure they do, I see it all the time on this forum

This was from 2010...with the Wrangler's biggest issue being lack of power (which was addressed in 2012). But, they did use a Rubi in the comparison, and the lockers were an advantage over an FJ without lockers. Winner...JK by a hair.

I found this one pretty funny. Toyota of Naperville is pretty close to me, and is where we got my wife's Rav4. I know, hard to believe...but they gave the FJ the edge...well at least for street driving.

The jeeps are still under powered IMO, just not as much anymore.

The FJ is pretty much Tacoma guts, and the Tacoma isn't bad offroad. The independent front suspension would be the first thing to let you down, but not till the going got pretty hardcore.

I think where the Wrangler kills the FJ is its other flexibility. Being able to drop the top and easily remove the doors is great, and the enormous aftermarket puts it over by a mile.

NoMoreYotas 06-11-2013 06:41 PM

jku hands down

Had a 2010 FJ Trail Teams. I now have a 2013 JKU and like it better in every way I can think of. Sorry I am not allowed to talk about the details.

Considering you're asking this on a Jeep forum, it seems like the answer is a foregone conclusion - Much like asking it on a Toyota forum. None of us would be here if we thought the Toyota was better.

Bayouwolf 06-11-2013 06:43 PM

Are they still shipping every FJ from the factory with a white cane to help you with all the blind spots?

The JKU is just as bad.

Jared66 06-11-2013 07:08 PM

I'll put it to you this way. If you want to rally race . Fj is the way to go. If you want to wheel. Go jeep. My cousin runs a 2013 fj with a 3 inch lift done out ect. He did his research. He can't crawl over what I can. But he can go a hell of alot faster when it's not too rough. Just depends on where you want to go. Any vehicle will get you there. It just depends on how much work and winching and shoveling you want to do along the way.

chris4x4 06-11-2013 07:12 PM

the 2 things that killed it for me, were the FJ's blind spots, and only 2 windows can be rolled down.

redbilly 06-11-2013 07:42 PM

The biggest difference for me is the Independent Front Suspension on the Toyota. The Wrangler's solid axle still makes it the King of true off-road, while the Yota is a nice mix of on road comfort and off-road worthiness. With a strong list of mods available, these are good vehicles that accept a lot of upgrades. If the Wrangler did not exist, I would strongly consider this. But fortunately I do own a Wrangler and you won't catch me trading for an FJ anytime soon!

Seeuoffroad 06-11-2013 07:47 PM

Was out in Moab wheel'n. meet a group of guys and hung put with them. Whole mixed bag of 4x4's Jeeps, Nissans and a very modified FJ. Lifted, 37's axels, lockers. That thing went every where.

fljeepleo 06-11-2013 08:03 PM

Dude, you aint doing what you do in a wrangler in a FJ….. without major body damage to the FJ. Seen it first hand!

LoveJiuJitsu 06-11-2013 08:14 PM

To add insult to injury, the FJ is ugly as hell.

I have to disagree. The FJ has almost Hummer styled windows, and has a large gap between them, so when you look back from the driver seat, you have much worse blind spot than the larger and almost gap free windows of the JKU.

About the FJ... They are a very capable vehicle, but just don't stack up. I'm not saying this from a jeep owners perspective, but from a factual one. The wrangler has a half inch higher clearance in the rear axle, and 3" higher in the front axle. The wrangler has the better approach and departure angles, and although that doesn't sound like a big deal, it's enough to stop or allow a vehicle to climb up something that will otherwise catch you hung up without the high angles. The wrangler also has a much better viewing angle from the windshield and windows, which we all know is extremely important. And one of the biggest advantages, is the live front axle. This alone makes me choose a wrangler over an FJ. Without lockers, a wrangler is still able to climb over just about anything because of the ability to keep all the wheels on the ground. With IFS like the FJ, it will loose a tire as soon as things get serous, leaving it stranded where the wranglers front live axle will flex over and get me up and over. On top of that, all JK's have brake lock differential. Not to get into too much detail, but the BLD will supply traction to a slipping tire, like an LSD, except we have it front AND rear, and works effectively when things get too rough for a regular open diff. All of the above listed information is all based on facts, not opinion, so I feel 100% confident saying that a wrangler is the better off roader, no question about it.

As long as the top and doors don't come off the FJ, I'm going to have to go ahead and disagree.
