Oil Filter

OK I'm old and my pidgens don't fly like they used to but, where the heck is my oil filter? 2012 wrangler sport just hit 1300 miles can't find it. Also can i remove the doors? Looks like there is a wire going into it.

If you have the 3.6 it's right on top of the engine near the front. It's not a metal canister like you may think, it's a paper element that drops into a cup. Look for a black plastic cap about 2" in dia. Remove the cap and there's the filter. Super easy and no mess. Don't over-tighten the cap when you put it back on.

As for the doors follow the wire harness under the dash. There is a connector there that you can disconnect and your good to go.

Pop off the cover on the engine (it just pulls off) and you'll see this 15/16" nut. That is where your cartridge filter goes. Yes the doors are removable, you just disconnect the wires.

Changing the oil on the 3.6 is by far the easiest I've ever done.

Correct Filter?

Be careful with the filter make. My first oil change on my 2012 was done by my mechanic, not at the dealership. After a week the CEL came on, went to the dealership, they ran the codes and said it needed a new oil pump. Did some reading and found out that if you don't use the factory filter this will happen. Had my mechanic put a factory filter on and all now OK. Apparently aftermarket filters don't allow the correct volume of flow and will throw errors. For my next oil change I went to the dealer. Picked up my Jeep, went home, put her to bed for the night. When I went to get in my Jeep the next morning there was oil on my garage floor. Popped the hood there was oil every where, top of the motor, underside of the hood, running down the motor, firewall, on my flares, and all down the undercarriage. Turns out he did use the correct filter, he just neglected to tighten it. I was very animated when I went back, even more so when they told me the "technician thought he had cleaned it up sufficiently". Remember the Exorcist where Linda Blair's head spins completely around? Mine only went part way. Whats a guy to do?

Aftermarket oil filters for the 3.6 made by the regular crowd of oil filter manufacturers meet and/or exceed manufacturer's specs. I've had no problem running a Wix filter on mine.

Follow the link above to download a copy of the owner's manual. Also, there is information on the CD protector on how to order a hard copy from Jeep.
