Finally part of the family. I know a few of you probably doubted if I'd get one. :) New JKU black!

Anyway I'm going to start modding slowly. First up wheels/tires/audio/lights.

Question on wheels/tires.

If I were to just upgrade the wheels for now would that be a wrong strategy? I was thinking of picking up DuraTrac's later in the year before Winter but if doing it at two different times is dumb then I'll do it all at once.

1) For wheels, do I have to search specifically for wheels with a 5x5 bolt pattern?
2) A lot of the wheels I find have a brand on the cap which I think is tacky. How easy is it to remove a brand on the cap? Just plasti dip the cap or something?

Welcome! No it's not a big deal to upgrade just the wheels. You'll have to pay to get them mounted twice and balanced twice but that's not that crazy at the end of the day. Plus some shops even do it for free or build it into the price to make it seem free when you buy tires from them so the second time you wouldn't know.

Yes you do need 5x5 wheels and you should ideally look for wheels with 4.5" or less of back spacing to prevent issues later if you go to a wider tire

And yes you can remove the logo on the wheel by painting it or filling it and painting it if its carved out. It's not too tough to do. If its not blatantly huge I'd almost keep it so when people admire your rig they can find out what wheels you have without having to ask you

Previous response pretty much nailed everything, except one point... If you really hate the center caps of a wheel they just pop right out when the wheel is off the truck, anything same diameter can go in there, they are just plastic and serve no real purpose.

In fact if you hated the center caps bad enough, you could just leave them out and have a big hole there. Truck wouldn't care.

Be proud of your wheels and display the brand on the cap. It's nice to show your Jeep isn't just an off-the-lot daily driver and that you actually care about it.

Just a congrats on the new Jeep. I know how you feel and that feeling doesn't go away. After a year of ownership, I'm still "giddy" when I drive it, work on it and even when I'm just looking at it.:)

Does this mean the following?

1) It will work on stock tires?
2) If I get 285/70/17 it will rub at full turn? Is this a standard 33" DuraTrac size?
2a) Is rubbing "bad?"
2b) Can wheel spacers solve the above?
2c) Are wheel spacers a "bad" mod to do or fine?
3) Is there a 32" DuraTrac that would fit without the same questions as above?

Gee... To think that after all this time of research and tinkering with different build options and finally ordering a Jeep with all the specific things I wanted, I was so happy to get "My" jeep and get it in my driveway. Now I can drive around in it and go camping and hunting in it as is... stock. But apparently, It is just an off-the-lot jeep so I must not care about it :nonono:

We wasn't dissing stock trucks, he was saying IF you got a custom thing on it, why wouldn't you be proud of said custom thing?

That M13 wheel looks very nice. Keeping my eyes open for a 2nd set of wheels for winter tires. But since the winter and salt wreaks havoc on wheels, it's a shame to put out a lot of money on winter shoes.

Also: The commando Green is one of those colors that shows up different on every picture. I assume it has to do with the White balance of the camera and different lighting. Even in person, it changes pending weather/lighting.

I can't answer what will fit and what will not without knowing that.

I just have stock Sport S. Just picked it up yesterday.

I think I'll get the M13's because the Gauntlet's have 5.47" backspacing.

Will the m13's fit both a stock Sport S tire and a DuraTrac 32" or 33" tire?

Ok with the M13's, you're not going to have any rub problems when turning, unless you get on to much wider tires (above 315). So you're good there.

If your truck currently has the stock tires, I'm assuming they are 17 inch, but what I need to know is how wide those tires are. Because the M13's are a 9 inch wide rim, and your stock rim I think is 7.5 inches.

So if the first number of your tire size is less than about 235 to say 250ish, its going to look a little silly. But as long as its a 17 inch tire currently you should be in good shape. I can't remember what the stock tire size is, so if you'd go out and look at the tire side wall that'd be helpful..

I run tires that are 315 wide, on a 4.5 backspace and have no rubs ever.

According to TireRack it is: 255/75-17 which sounds correct for me but I can double check.

Should I get the DuraTracs now then if I want the m13s? What size would fit? Thanks for the help Kurt!

on TireRack they say: Recommended Tire Size: 255/75-17 so might be perfect for stock tires - hopefully DuraTracs come in that size too, what happens if it's slightly different?

If you're buying tires and wheels you could do a Duratracs 265/70 17. That gives you a tire 32inches tall and. 10.5 inch wide, will look beefy and will not rub. This tire will not work with your stock rim and will rub if you try it.

An agent on tirerack said this: "The M13 comes in +12 and -12mm offsets. Both will cause the tire and wheel to stick out past the fender line"

That's bad right?

He also said: "You should have a lift if it is sticking out - otherwise when you turn the wheel the tire edge will catch on the sway bar or air dam"

I don't want to lift this puppy for a while...

the stock 255's will fit on that rim, but if you can get the rim in a 17x8 with 4.5backspace you might be happier. Being a 17x9, its going to look a little odd with the 255's, but they should mount just fine.

You can even consider the duratracks at 285/70 17, Thats about as far as you can go before you're need to lift.. The 315/70 gets into the 34 or 35 inch diameter and thats too much for stock.

Tire size is easy... first numbers is width in mm... second number is the percentage of the first number that is sidewall height... so 70% of 285 is 199mm (about 7.8 inches...) you have a sidewall on the bottom of the wheel and one above it, sothats about 15.4 inches Plus your 17 inch rim equals a 32.4 inch tire

Should fit great...and the 4.5 backspace should buy you the room you need.

Ok I don't want anything to look odd for sure. I can just get the Duratracs now.

I'm concerned about the "rubbing" the Tirerack agent told me about but perhaps that's just a general thing they're saying because they don't know much specifically about Wranglers?

He said there would be rubbing because of the +12/-12mm offsets?

You're saying I can get the M13 + DuraTracs at 285/70/17 and be ok with compatibility and no rub? My other option is 265/70/17 Duratracs (is what agent recommended me but said wheels are going to cause rub) Also if I do get it, should I get the +12 mm offset or -12mm?

Let me simplify it: screw my stock tires.

If I get the M13's 17": what tires can I buy that will fit that are recommended by Jeepers for All Terrain + Snow capable and not require me to get a lift that is between 32-33"?

Tire shop guys vary, some are good, some are dumb, here is what you need to know..

Your 4.5 offset is going to buy you about 2 extra inches on the inside of the tire away from the suspension, frame, etc... Assuming you mount a 285 tire, your tire is going to be about 1.5 inches wider than your stock tire. Half of that width on each side of center, right, so .75 closer to the internals minus the 2 inches discussed with offset means that your new wider tires are actually going to have MORE clearance from the suspension than the stock rig did (this all assumes you install the 4.5 offset wheels).

The only rub you MIGHT get is with the stock bumper (I don't have one so I don't know) Turn your wheel all the way to the right, then on the drivers side have a look at the distance from the closest part of the tire to the back of the bumper.. If its less than about 1 inch, you might get a rub there with your new set up... Thats the only place you need to worry about.

I am currently running AEV 17" Pintlers with Duratrac LT28570R17 (32.8" diameter) with no lift and have not experienced any rubbing issues. The AEV Pintlers have a 5.2" backspacing.

Based on everything I can think of (and your photos) you should be fine. If you did end up getting a rub there (but the poster above says he doesn't) there is a conversion out there to make the stock bumper into a shorty, and that would get it out of the way and make your truck look better too... I don't have the stock bumper though, so I don't know much about that.

Based on your photos though, I think you'll be just fine.

And yes, the tire you linked appears to be the one we are talking about.

Don't forget, you need five wheels and five tires, assuming you want your spare to match.
